I went with the Bassett Picatinney mount, which allows the use of the irons looking under the mount.

The Bassett is easy to install and remove, plus it does not require removing the stripper clip guide, which I occasionally use for charging the magazine.

If you go with the higher mount, you'll need a cheek riser.

I have a TacPro adjustable riser, adjustable up for scope down, for irons.

Thanks from Wasted ammo and Jim bowie

Thanks everyone. What about "hotter" 308win hunting ammo in the m1a? Anything to look out for with the gas system? I like hornady superformance in my 7mm. Claims to be 200fps faster without extra recoil impulse.

The gas system is not the problem with hotter hunting loads, bending the op rod is the problem with hot loads.

Jim, I would strongly recommend that you NOT use Hornady Superperformace in your M1A unless you install a Schuster gas plug and tune it for that ammo. It is way too hot for the gas system and stands a very good chance of damaging your op rod. The trouble comes from where the level of pressure is when it reaches the gas port-the receiver can handle the pressure of standard .308 rounds but the powder burns too long down the barrel and causes the pressure to be too high at the port. M1A/M14 was designed for 150 grain bullet at around 2600-2700 feet per second. Superperformance kicks out a 165 grain bullet at about 2800fps. Does this mean that you can't use your new rifle for hunting? No, it means that you can't use hot ammo. 150-165 grain standard ammo should be OK for no more rounds that you would need for sighting in and hunting. Would not recommend using commercial .308 for a match where you would shoot 400-500 rounds or going to the range and burning thru 2-300. Best bet is to get some surplus ammo from SGAmmo. $.02.

So perhaps some federal fusion 150? Thanks

Welcome to the forum, lots of very useful information available to you. I have a Springfield Scout Squad. The CA muzzle brake is significantly louder than a flashider. I have been running mine with a Trijicon MRO. I tried a forward 1-7 power scout scope but did not like it as well as the MRO. Get out and warm your M1A up and have some fun.

MRO are interesting. Ive looked into them for ARs. Have read some complaints about lack of adjustment within optic to zero and also of glare when lights from behind. Returned my eotech because I did experience cold weather poa shift. They were good to their word on the recall.

Federal Fusion MSR is designed for short barreled (16-18") semi-autos. Works well in mine.

Took mine off and replaced with a handrail. Love the length of the Scout, but honestly hated the rail system.

Awards Showcase

The difference is about the price of the wood stock.

I would shop around for a better price on the rifle with a walnut stock. You can usually pick up a take-off polymer stock for well under $100, to use as a beater.
