For what it's worth, when I was looking to put a red dot on my SOCOM16 I read that the farther forward you mount the red dot scope the better, something to consider and read up on. I have my SOCOM mounted in an Archangel stock with an Aimpoint ML4 2MOA dot and it works fine for me. With the flick of a lever on the mount I'm back to the irons. Can't do that with what you're looking at.

I wrote SA and asked some questions about the mount and red dot in that picture. Here is what I received back from SA.

"Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Springfield Armory. That mount is Springfield’s mount. They are currently not available for purchase. We have not been told if or when they would be for purchase so you will have to check back with us at a later date. The mount fits into the dovetail, and the iron sights do co witness with the red dot sight.

Thank you for that info. I'm still very new to this red dot thing and I will have to do a LOT more researching before I decide which way to go

Thanks for the input.

I spoke with Angie at Springfield on Friday, Jan 14th.

The mount is a custom mount, which fits into the stripper clip mounting point in the receiver and the Vortex Venom attaches directly to the mount itself without a picatinnay rail or adapter, making it very low profile, enough to co-witness the sight when brought up.

According the Angie, Springfield does not yet have any plans to sell the mount separately. She said that I should call back in 3 to 6 months to see if they have changed their mind.

Laugh as many of you will but I might just purchase the rifle for the mount and site. Mount the rifle in one of my wood stocks and flip it.

A think about it moment. You want to go through all that to mount a small red dot with a 3 MOA dot with 1 MOA adjustments that's maybe good to 75 yrds (and that's a maybe) for ???? why exactly? It's your time and money but I don't see any functional practicality to that. It will be a novelty though. I'll stick with my Aimpoint M3 and M4 2 MOA dot which works real well on my SOCOM or my Scout with the ARMS 18 which gets the most performance out of both.

To bad somebody doesn't have a mill in their garage.

I'd be willing to pay a reasonable price for a custom piece.

Like ex-girlfriend used to say. "I'm just say'n" :)

I don't see how it co-witnesses with the sights.

Optic+mount+the rail. Even a stock Fast Fire 2/3 mount is too high.

I have access to a mill in my pops hot rod shop and I have been seriously thinking about giving it a go.

Plus he's a retired master machinist.

The sight sits very low. In the picture, the peep sight looks to be lowered all the way down.

Once you raise it up for any distance shooting, I think the peep would co-witness the red dot sight glass

Ted Brown noted on one of his posts that some of the rifles he had worked on which used the Arms18 mount, which is a very low mount, had problems with the ejected brass hitting the base and dropping back into the action causing jams. Would this low mount possibly cause the same problems? Just asking.

That's different than the Sage mount.

That mount from Springfield allows you to mount your reddot direct to the dovetail mount, by passing the use of a separate mount on the reddot.

Hmm....this might be doable.

I have a manual machine shop (No CNC). But I would need the mount to get the specs and I would need to ask some questions about the red dot unit. The unit sits awfully low for a picatinny mount. It must be a direct mount as mentioned.
1215 or 12L14 would be the steel for the mount or maybe a 303SU Stainless.

This is all hypethetical of course, 'cause I imagine SA has a patent on it.

Awards Showcase

I like it. Although, one concern I have is how robust is the glass on the optic sitting right there over the action?

This is much better. Just give me a month to get it made. Zoom in on the iron sight picture. Wide open view. This mount sits just high enough so one has to barely move between irons and red dot, and low enough that a solid chin well is provided. (Patented) Questions?
