| Scout Squad upgrades
Ok guys, the more I learn, the more I don't know...
I have a stock SA Scout Squad [18"]. I am about to order a few parts to make it more user friendly to me.
[Brownells]
100-004-037 Tactical Magazine Release
851-000-055 M14 Extended Bolt Stop
First are there any special tools I might need or want to do these upgrades?
817-000-087 Sight, Rear, Hooded Aperture, National Match
Second, I would like to switch to a hooded rear sight, and until I read the self install NM thread I thought all I needed was to buy the NMrear sight and spend 2 minutes installing. Upgrade to NM rear sight (self installation question) This post implies there are thread pitch differences? Does this mean I have to do all 4 parts?

It will work. SAI Loaded and match rifles do not have the NM site base but use the ball detent NM mod instead. The different thread pitch in the NM base is for the windage adjustments, not the elevation.
What kind of shooting are you doing? If you are doing KD target shooting, then the NM hooded aperture will help you shoot a bit more accurately. However, if you are using your rifle for hunting or in other situations where you may encounter changing light or low light conditions, the NM hooded aperture will make it harder for you to see your target and front site.

Ok, again, slowly, in english, like you are speaking to a child....
My rifle is not the Loaded or match rifle, it is the scout squad. I shoot 3 gun, and if I am shooting in low light, I have worse problems than being able to see my sights.
So the part I listed is a drop in part for my rifle? Am I going to have to file it or do any other 'smithing?

I'd hold off on the doo dads until you get the accuracy, etc. sorted out.

So far I have had everything else but the M1A, so I know I can shoot a variety of rifles. I chose these accessories based on issues I have already experienced. I shoot better with a hooded rear sight. Larger controls should be easier to activate in a hurry, etc. It makes sense to me to install the accessories first, then learn and get used to the rifle, rather than learn first, then change things, and have to re-learn.

how big are your hands? i wrote a big huge post about how you don't need those accessories. then i erased it and thought to myself "maybe he does"
Even if you have tiny 2 inch thumbs i think that you should still be able to operate the gun just fine and you would do much better to get a sadlak NM spring guide before you go after those catches and releases. the mag release would be ok i guess (i have no prob with it) but the bolt catch would change my receiver appearance to much for no real benefit. the bolt locks back fine when the mag is empty.
i would look into the inexpensive stuff like the spring guide , piston and other tricks (like stock trimming, or a whole new stock) to get your gun shooting straighter before you worry about those "doodads"
read about those things then think about it, and again if you do have 2 inch thumbs don't listen to me.

I have a SOCOM 16 and I installed both the extended mag release and the bolt stop. The mag release is very handy works as advertised, the bolt release...ehh.
For me, I haven't found any advantage for the bolt release but then I don't shoot three gun competitions and I'm left handed. It's just as useful for me to use my right hand and smack the op rod handle as anything else. Additionally, I have closed the bolt inadvertently a few times because of the large bolt stop.
As for the NM sights, I can't help much there except to point you to a couple of links that might help out. http://www.fulton-armory.com/%5Cfaqs...MRearSight.htm Upgrade to NM rear sight (self installation question) |
