Leupold Prismatic Riflescope...

I am new here, and new to the M14/M1a as well. I just purchased an M1a Socom II, and I am interested in putting optics on it. Leupold makes an illuminated prismatic riflescope, 1X14 with a 30mm tube, which I am interested in. The problem associated with this optic is the eye relief, which is stated to be 3 to 5 inches or thereabouts. Have any of you used this optic after finding a suitable mounting solution? If so how was the unit mounted?

Thanks,

Jim

I dont have a leupold on my rifle any more but i use to, they are great scopes. Dont worry about the eye relief that is about normall for any scope, remember if it has leupold writen on it you know its a dam good product.
Good Shooting.

Young Guns,

The problem is not the scope, I know it is a nice piece of equipment, the issue is the scope will be mounted in front of the breech, on the top rail, which is way beyond the stated maximum eye relief of this optic. I am looking at the Sadlak Industries aluminum scope mount to elevate the issue of eye relief. I am also considering a red dot optic, although I believe the accuracy with the prismatic will be better.

Thanks for the reply,

Jim

You should have stated that you were talking about the forward optics/attachment rail. I never use those rails i take them off and sell them, TOO dam heavy and useless.

A Sadlak scope mount with a set of rings would be a good choice than. I would also look at a SEI mount, or a ARMS 18 mount. That would be good for a Leupold.

If you want a redot which the Socom 2 is pretty much made for using. Just buy a redot and mount it on the rail in a scout formation. Or you can buy a scout scope which has a longer eye relief and mount that on the forward rail.

Good Shooting.

Young Guns,

Thanks for the assistance. I now have to decide on a forward mounted, red dot optic, or the prismatic on the Sadlak mount. I may opt for the less expensive option, just for the present, of the red dot, and shoot the heck out of the rifle and see how it performs. I'd much rather be putting rounds down range, than pondering the benefits of this optic vs. that.

Thanks again,

Jim

you might take a look at this if a non magnified optic is what your looking for and it can be done economically if you are not sure of the application..

I went with the HOPCO/Burris FastFire II combo in order to keep weight down and yet provide improved sight picture for my older eyes. It works for me and mount and sight cost wise is some 300.00 combined. Physical size of combo is such that it is barely larger than the original issue sight and can tell no difference in weight of rifle, only adds few ounces I would guess. The issue rear sight for me is about as good as it gets on service type rifles, but find this new set up quick to get on target, easier to see for me as well, and with the dot system, entire focus on target, not post and target alignment.
Have only used system on 100yd targets so far and it did well, but going to range today and will take it on out to 2,3, and 400yds. Depending on the "trigger puller" shot placement will not be as precise as NM issue sights nor scope, but for normal casual shooting does very well yet no bulk or weight.
