Joined the ranks of bolt roller woes.

Picked up a Springfield standard a few months ago to keep my Poly company. At 280 rounds, the bolt roller came off. Sent it back and they replaced the roller and clip. Next time out, it only lasted 20 rounds, so back it went and they put in a new bolt. Well, it came off again today. Wonder if they will ever get it fixed ? And my Poly just keeps going and going and ........

Thanks from Seventh Fleet

Don't sell it this is a fairly common problem with newer Springfield recievers. I'm surprised they didn't fix it the first time. The bolt roller is bottoming out when the bolt closes. As JD said they fixed one, give them a call and let them fix yours. I think it just needs a little clearence.

It's a relatively EZ fix & if properly done you can't even see it..... The problem area is the cut out under the stripper clip guide... Due to a lack of clearance when the rifle cycles the roller binds on the rec & is forced off the bolt

Thanks for the great info, I'll keep sending it back until they get it right! I've got my trusty Poly to shoot in the meantime. Bought it new in 93 or 94 and paid 300 bucks. Sent it off to Smith in 96 for an upgrade and to Warbird a couple years ago for a Gi bolt install. I kick myself for not buying a dozen back then when I had the chance.

jortinva, what's the serial # range on your receiver so members can be alert? The roller-squeeze issue has been an off-and-on thing with SAI receivers a long time.

Angry Update

Well, got it back today and they just installed another roller and clip. They did put a note: installed clip different to get more pressure. I'll keep the box handy cuz I've got a feeling I'll need it

Take a pic of the roller hitting the receiver and include it next time.

I can't see anywhere that the roller is hitting the receiver. It spins freely when the bolt is lockup, where else could it be hitting ?

Reread post #5. The "slot" in the receiver when the bolt is drawn towards the rear of the receiver.

Thanks from jortinva

Does the gas piston stop the op rod or does the bolt roller stop the op rod?

OK, after looking again, I can see a wear spot under the stripper clip guide. Maybe Springfield figures it's cheaper to keep replacing the roller until it wears enough to stop hitting !
