Battle Rifle Weight Survey

Hey folks,

Having just switched from the Steyr AUG configuration to a full on battle rifle, I am really feeling the weight. Right now my scout eMOD (VLTOR stock) is weighing in at around 10lbs 8 ounces with a vortex strike fire (when i get an aim point if my a cog sells it should be around the same weight given a few 1/10ths of an oz.).this is with a loaded 20 rd mag.

Anyone out there know your systems weight? how about carbon fiber? I am especially curious about the rogue chassis weight (eh jug?) as that looks heavy.

my socom 16 weights in at 11.85lbs with aimpoint red dot, angle grip and magpul sights...............seems heavy until you shoulder it, then the weight disappears. You need to remember that your aug is a 5.56 not a 7.62.....comparing the two rifles is not fair. More powerful cartridges require thicker receivers and barrels.

My National Match M-14 weighs in a little over 12 lbs with a 22" medium weight barrel, sling, cleaning kit, bedded G.I. birch stock and loaded mag. I hike with it on a regular basis. Yeah it gets heavy, it sure as hell is not my 16" barrel AR-15A2.

My L1A1 weighs about 1.2 lbs less. My M-1 Garand is close to the L1A1. My Remington 700P with scope, 1 piece Picatinny mount, bipod, sling and 26" heavy barrel is over 14 pounds and very nose heavy. I leave that one at home!

I weigh in at a whopping 135 lbs soaking wet! All of these rifles provide me with good exercise when hiking!

A sampling:

5lbs 14oz. W/night sights

9lbs 8 oz W/A2 govn't profile bbl.

w/ 22" bbl and ARMS #18. About 2oz lighter w/ the 18.5" barrel, but that isn't working out so well.

My SCAR 17S is a bit heavier than yours as I've got it wearing an Elcan Specter DR, but its still crazy light compared to my new M1A build.

It weighs in at about 10.2 pounds with an Elcan Specter DR, sling and AAC Blackout flash hider.

Then I tried to weigh my M1A.

All my scale could tell me was that my gun was old....

Juggernaut that sounds manageable at 11.5lbs. I really like the rogue design.

Sure an aug is gonna be way less that most guns but, IMO it has less to do with the caliber than with the rampant use of polymer. as you can see Jmore's battle rifle at 5.5lbs perfect for the carbine role and chambered in 7.62

Weight isn't everything if your strong enough to carry it, or aren't wearing body armor or LBE.

I also like weight as I shoot a hell of a lot better standing up with my m1a than a light weight gun.
though if i have to hump it for 10 miles i might wanna rethink my para big hawg (those ounces add up fast do they not?)

You're talking to the wrong guy!!! In the Corps i humped an M-60 machine gun and a m16a2, plus ammo, PRC77, extra batteries.......then my Pac and duece gear.............It's really hard to listen to someone complain about a 12 or 13lb rifle.......My sweetheart weights in at 20lbs loaded, I don't find it heavy! Man up People! LOL;)

My M-4 weighed 12 to 13 with an acog, peq 15, surefire, and 203. The biggest pain is carrying a 240 tripod. Lugging around kit for someone other dude to use is the worst. I like the weight of my ebr now. Its heavy enough to absorb recoil and let you know you are carrying a real gun without being a burden.

The M4 example is a good reason why a lightweight "basic" rifle is good. It means you can hang more gear on it, or lug more ammo, etc.

Military longarms that get carried all day by a soldier on foot tend to end up weighing 9 to 11 pounds. Early 1700s through the 1960s. The M16 started light, but now it falls in the average weight as well. Increased mechanization of the infantry seems to have made weight of the rifle secondary to other features- the two opposing trends seem to be increased capability and improved handling/maneuverablilty/compactness.

The Rogue stock addresses both trends simultaneously- if you are right handed...

But since the question was asked, here's some more weights checked for this thread:

M1A w/T44 stock and handguard: 8lb 7 oz
FAL: 10lb 0oz
H&K G3 clone: 9lb 9oz w/o bipod, 10lb 4oz w/bipod
AR10 LMT L129a1 clone: 13lb 14oz

Light

Not so light

Not battle rifles:
Win 100 w/3x9 scope: 7lb 15oz
Saw: 5lb 2oz

Thanks from cachunk

Nice brush blade there on the scythe. We used the grass blades more when I was a kid. Man, once you get that blade sharp and get the step/swing/twist method down pretty good you can really lay some grass/weeds down with one of those things and it won't get you as tired as a weed eater. When I got older the wood handles got harder to find and dad bought a couple of the "new" aluminum handles but I never like those. The balance wasn't right with the long blade on the end.

rifle weight? Get used to it. My gun belt weighed 13 lbs. with everything on it and I never knew that till one of the other guys commented on it and asked how much it weighed. We went somewhere (don't remember where we found the scale) and weighed it and it was 13 lbs.

I used to deer hunt with my M1A in WV when I was in a happier stage of my life and I never noticed the weight (before or after the bucks hit the ground).

Jmoore-

Very good analysis, thank you! I never quite thought of it that way

That blade's retired now that my favorite uncle went to his reward, but it certainly has cut it's share. Now I'm reduced to using a swing blade, but there's a lot less acreage to tend. Don't much care for the weedeaters.

One thing that a heavy rifle with a pistol gripped stock will do after carrying it all day is give me a numb wrist and forearm. Takes hours to get the feeling back! But I tend to still hunt and disguise myself as a very slow moving tree. Makes both the deer and myself crazy during squirrel season! Amazing how close they'll get if you can remain frozen in position whilst standing. And that's easier with a lighter rifle. Try remaining motionless with your rifle at "high ready" for 10-20 minutes, hoping a deer will ease into the sight picture...Works too! But can be agonizing. Worse for the deer.
