New cowitnessable scout mount coming

Midwest industries is joining the fray.

They posted a thread on the m14 section of ar15.com, and I thought that might be relevant to peoples interest here.

Thanks for posting. That looks interesting...might be a good way to put a dot sight on my Vltor stocked scout.

Funny they posted it on ar15.com but neglected the site dedicated to M14s

This seems like a much better option then some of the other things I have seen lately. I like the mount on my SOCOM but hate that it doesn't co-witness. I like my iron sights but hate I can't use them with an optic. This seems like the best of both worlds.

Yeah, unless you have a dedicated scope gun, why would ever NOT want your irons available. It is funny they post over on the AR 15 site first, someone in their PR/Marketing dept needs to have a slap in the back of the head.

Because ArfCom sadly is the end all be all of gun sites, and they(MI) already have a presence there

ETA: I also LOVE that light mount

I'd be concerned about heat transfer with that little mass between the barrel and optic.

But a passive RMR might be just the ticket.

Oddly, I've never found that "6061" and "rugged" go together well. 6061 is easy to extrude and weld (and is fairly cheap and corrosion resistant), but isn't nearly as strong as 2024, 7075, or 7050.

The fairly lightly constructed ears "guarding" the mini-reddot may not be as protective as they look.

But the concept seems good enough to try.

Thanks from SOCOM42

How does it attach to the barrel?

It mounts useing a similar barrle clamp desin as the SA Inc. scout rail that they produce excep this does not have a rial and insted has holes to bolt the particuler sight that you chose to put on it.

What's the chance of drilling and tapping the barrel and screwing the mount on directly. Clamps can distort the bore of a barrel......

Im pretty sure drilling and tapping directly into the barrel would be structurally unsafe as well as more damaging to it then clamping a mount to it.

the mount pictured looks like it might be Trijicon specific...must have another port on the left side to provide access to the on/off switch for the Burris. As far as the sight withstanding the heat, I haven't run across any definative torture tests. I know battery life is shortened.....how much?...depends on how hot, how long and how often. The passive RMR is a possible solution to the heat question....the known/unknown is the fiber optic and how much heat can it withstand...you may have to contend with heat mirage and on the other end of the temperature scale you have to deal with steam and condensation coming off the mount and fogging the lens in damp, wet or cold weather. Putting right on the barrel is certainly one way of getting go-witnessing capability but may render it a "fair weather" optic.

*Not to hijack the thread*...

Another option for a Mini red dot is the Larue mount.

I got the LT-624 to use with a Pride Fowler MRD.

This mount surrounds the sight with an aluminum shroud (ala Eotech), and while it is a little bit too high to co-witness, it is a QD mount, so it can be on or off in one second (and returns to zero).

This whole setup only weighs three ounces. I removed my stripper clip guide (which weighs 1.2 oz) so, I gained a removeable red dot and only added 2 oz.

Just wanted to throw another option out there....
