Awards Showcase

I couldn't make up my mind so I bought a standard and a SOCOM.

I bought the standard over the scout because I already have a shorter LOUD rifle. Plus I like that the rifle balances so well with a 22" tube, and the velocity is correct.

Think it depends on what you want it for, shorter more CQB, loner if you want to throw a scope and shoot long range.

I think the Scout is the best overall performer. You get a shorter platform and you sacrifice very little in performance and accuracy. IMHO

Yep... thats what I did. Best of both worlds.

I would buy a standard first. Tweak it a bit, then when you've spent all your money getting the most out of it, then save for a SOCOM...... You'll probably end up with all three at some point anyway.

Thanks from RAMMAC and heyjowee

I’ll tell you what, we have one expensive hobby, just think you have glass M1A’s, AR’s, 1911’s, stocks, bullets, and so much more and it is a vicious rotating cycle.

The rifle was designed around the cartridge.

i totally agree with this. the Scout is the best balance of maneuverability and power imho. if i were stuck with one rifle, it would be a scout. i also like the balance of it but thats a subjective view.

according to this article, 18-20" is about right for the .308 and anything more isnt really necessary. i also shoot a 20" remington 700. the scout is my general purpose rifle and the R700 is for more precision, but only when 2moa wont do :)

Yup! My sentiments exactly. I've got two 18" M14 style rifles now. I have all the parts for another, including a 22" Winchester barrel so will probably have it built as a standard. I have supermatch but it's a heavy pig with a mercury recoil reducer glass bedded into the stock. It does balance the heavy barrel well but not something that I'd want to pack around.

I pretty much just shoot my 18"er's nowadays.

A scout can also be made to mirror a SOCOM in length within about 1/2" with the appropriate FH/MB.

when people ask that question, i tell them, the standard. you cant go wrong with a standard and it will do anything you want it to do (for the most part). when in doubt, go standard......then when you save your pennies again, get the scout. i will say, that the scout is all you need if you dont plan on shooting past 300yds.......still, for someone new to the platform, i recommend the standard. i have both and love them both. i love my standard more.

Yowser!

all dressed up --

or out of the box --

and my dream M1A was a scout in wood, no rail on barrel -- and when I built it, my buddy took it away from me!
