Tell me about the M274 Mechanical Mule

My step father has a couple of these in various states of disrepair and will require work to get running.

They look really interesting, I'm tempted to try to get one running. What do I need to know before I dive into this project?

Also, mods, if this is the wrong forum, please move it.

Parts Source. so go here: http://www.mechanicalmulesofamerica.com/MuleParts.html, and parts canbe found on ebay too.

Matt
There are quite a few forum members here that have had hands on experience with the mule while serving this country
I do not wish to take you away from the knowledge and wisdom of this forum's membership , however
steel soldiers , a military vehicle forum has a lot of information concerning the mule that may help you along

Hope it works out. My Attack helicopter unit at Ft Bragg, traded with the Marines to get two. They were workhorses for us bring rockets and 20mm out to our Cobra's or loaded with a refuel pump/water separator unit for a mobile refuel point. Eventually the Army took them away but one of them made it to the Airborne museum in Fayetteville NC.

I used to drive one twice each year at our local machine gun shoot to carry out reactive targets for set-up, carrying passengers to the matches, and carrying fire extinguishers for putting out brush fires. Has no suspension to speak of. Not very fast, but seems to climb quite well with a load.

If you're into the nostalgia angle, they are COOL. Much better things out there that cost less $$$ that will do a better job.

Mule's at Cookies Tavern

Theres a gentleman from Claymont Delaware who collects mules. He brings them to the LEGENDARY COOKIE'S TAVERN MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY PARTY, every year in Philly on November 10th. He also has one he's working on that has a Tow Missle set up that's complete but not ready to show.

Great party and great show.

Cookies tavern

I hope I'm not off topic here but here's what Cookies Tavern Marine Corps Birthday party looks like a 10AM and it goes on till 2AM.

All veterans are welcome and non DD214 people are considered guests.
(unless , of course, your a lady who can keep up with the jarheads and left your boyfriend home. :^)
