In early January 1966 I had been in Survey Section Hq. 3/12 for only a week. We were assigned to do a precision registration for the ARVN Arty's guns north of Chu lai. On the way we were stopped by civilians who told us Charly was collecting taxes a few miles ahead. Captain George Baker called Btn. to advise a plan to attack Charly. Lt. Col. Page radioed back "negative return to base" Capt. Baker radioed "last message garbled, proceeding as planned" The result was USMC 5 Chaley 0. (3KIA, 2 prisoners). Page chewed out Baker until Gen. Krulak messaged a "well done, proves our philsophy that every Marine is a basic rifleman".
Buy the way, the incident was written up in Stars and Stripes on Jan 26, 66, and I have a Nagant Model 53 I got that day in my gun safe next to my M14.

Well, If you were in Chu Lai in 66 you would have seen him!
He had the shiniest H34 I ever saw and he was one STRAK sob! I think I remember he was about 5'8"
He visited D Med (on the beach, next to MAG11) a bunch of times while I was there. He awarded Purple Hearts etc. and visited with wounded Marines. In addition, one of his sons was a Navy Chaplin with our Hospital Co.
He was the CO of the 3rd MAF and picked Chu Lai as the first spot to develop as a Marine base of operations.
Chu Lai is the way the Vietnamese would say Krulak.
Former HM2, RVN 66-67-68
(If I missed anything, let me know. I liked the guys attitude.

I've got two photos of him awarding my solitary PHM when we landed at Hawaii to drop off wounded local Marines while on the trip back to CONUS.
One photo was snapped as he pins the medal on my hospital shirt, and the second as he takes my hand to exchange a firm shake.
He came aboard the C141 Starlifter MATS transport on the tarmac, and made the awards to the wounded men present.
At the time (1968), Lt.Gen Krulak was CG FMF-PAC. Yes, he is not large in stature, but that attribute has never defined leadership anyway.
From the story I heard, Chu Lai base was named for him because it incorporated his INITIALS "V" + "K" as spoken in Vietnamese. Goes to show how many different variations on a legend.

I believe I stood on a parade ground for him when he left Nam in 68 or 69, and I believe it was a Hill 55.

Met his son once, Chuck Krulak, former Commandant USMC and now the President at my brother's college. Chatted briefly on the development of Amphib Doctrine in WWII and his dad's role in it, (my senior thesis at the time). Great guy, Jumped me for needing to get into better shape when i mentioned my interest to enlist in the Corps, and brother loves the guy as President
