June-sept 88 arrived at PI at aprox 2 o'clock in the afternoon in a white Dodge van with 5 other guys. East coast had a hurricane and all air traffic was grounded for 3 days. I was stuck in Atlanta Ga airport for 3 days.
Went thru receiving with a group that wound up in 2nd Bat. but since they already had formed myself and the other 4 guys had to go thru receiving again! Sat for 4-5 days with our heads on those little school room desks on receiving like a kid in detention! That sucked!
Went thru receiving AGAIN and dropped to training with 3rd Bat 3071.
Went thru till the last day of mess and Maint where is was 1st squad leader and got celuitous in my trigger finger! Finger was as big as a sausage and as black as my combat boots! Got sent to Beuford Naval hospital 4 like 5 days.

Thaught I was going back to my platoon but was informed I missed 1 to many training days to be allowed to continue with "my" platoon! Again, that SUCKED!
Was told I HAD TO go to the pork MRP platoon, mandatory, and pass 2 PFT's and be cleared by the doc before I could go back to training! Holy F*#k!
Conned the doc, passed 2 PFT's by doing my pullups one handed.

I don't know if any of you guys ever had to go to the MRP platoon but let me tell you that sucked! I was there to become a Marine, there weren't 10 other guys out of the aprox 100 that were there who wanted to continue to train or become a Marine. Most were working the system and trying to get a medical discharge! I wanted to pop! Saw 5 kids tryn hang themselves!

I did meet "Pappy" boyingtons grandson in the MRP platoon. Boy he was just like Pappy, short, face big and square like a bulldog, straight shooter and hard as nails!

"Pappy" and I dropped back into training again with 3rd Bat 3017. I had to be thru mess and Maint duty again! And finally graduated almost 5 months after landing on the island!

Recieving twice, mess and Maint twice! And then got stuck on PI after graduation because of another hurricane for 6 days! That Island didn't want me to leave!

How long or how many guys had their DI's make the Unks on pre qual day pack all there shit and do the "sea bag drag" to the range on qual day?

Boy I'll tell ya we had, I think 4-5, guys who weren't shooting well enough all week to qual and the night before qual day my "heavy" went ape shit! We all played hell! I had aprox 17 drill instructors during my extended stay on PI (see prior explanation please) and DI SGT Cozine was the meanest, craziest SOB I have ever met! I mean he lost his mind about having potential Unks in his platoon! I don't think we slept that night, we did inspection arms with our foot lockers for so long guys were passing out!
He told us ( and I believed him) that if everyone of us did not qualify he would kill is all! Everyone of my platoon qualified! No range drops!

Ahhh good times, wonderful memories! I'm GD proud of being a Marine, training and leadership traits have served me well thru life! Not to mention knowing I have the ability to put up with, deal with, suck it up and make it thru anything life has to throw at me! Be man it makes me think, " what in the hell was I thinking?"
Million dollar experience that I don't know if I would do again for 3 million! And what the hell was I thinking when I re enlisted? JK! Besides being a father being a Marine is the best thing I've ever done and the most rewarding! And no one can take either honor away!
For those who have been there I need not to explain! For those who haven't I won't cause you just won't understand! Semper Fi Marines!

Thanks from GeneCo
