Very famous foto that really captures the Marine spirit. They should name a ship after him.

For historical clarity, I think that the photo was not the original flag raising on Iwo Jima.
A larger flag was brought up later that day which is seen in the photo.

Joe Rosenthal's image is arguably THE MOST FAMOUS photograph EVER taken, one that captures the very spirit of the American fighting man. I think it is a fine idea.

Which of the two?

If named after the person that took first, "original" the picture, while action was still goin on, He earned the Honor... The second picture was a re=enactment, Hollywood does that best... Art

Doesn't the Navy have at least one ship named for an "Army" MOH recipient?

Awards Showcase

There are a lot of names ahead of a civilian photographer who took a staged photo. They can be seen here. 3 of them did the actual flag raising.

Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Michael Strank, Franklin Sousley, Rene Gagnon, and Harlon Block should get ships named in their honor first.

How long before the Navy is forced to name one the USS Obama?

Does the Navy still have garbage scows?

Thanks from A Seabee

I have (2) two Great Uncles who were killed there. Lots of good Marines ahead of him! Happy Shooting

Wrong choice.

Naming a US Navy ship after Gary Cooper, he played Sgt. Alvin York in a movie, is just as poor a choice... Art

Considering they recently named a US Navy ship the Harvey Milk, I'd be happy with any ship named Rosenthal or anyone else who was actually affiliated with the military; especially one that brought honor to the US in any conflict.

Tony.

I wouldn't call a dead dog using the name Obama.

Unfortunately, that would be a carrier.
