Are Dress Blues Legal Liberty Uniform?

Our son and some of his fellow pilots were at Nellis AFB in Vegas last week for training. Being young men, of course they visited downtown to see the sights and one of the first of these, was a young junior enlisted Marine wearing dress blues who was so trashed that he was barely self-propelled. The pilots hired a cab, took him back to his hotel and made him comfortable in his room. He said that he had been part of a group of Marines who'd left him and that didn't set well with the AF guys. As I recall, blues were not a liberty uniform. Has that changed?

Dress Blue Bravo, with ribbons and badges, yes for libo. Dress Blue Alpha with medals, no for libo. Formal military occasions only, like the Birthday ball.

Thanks from willriskit

Earlier this evening I was talking with a buddy who is a Master Guns retired and he told me that dress blues are being issued to everyone in MCRD now. As I recall from my era, the only ones who got them were guys going to sea school and the platoon honor man.

2336 is correct. Alphas are not authorized for liberty. Dress blues are a required uniform now. Like you said, they get issued to every recruit at boot camp and if you joined before that started happening your last uniform allowance should have been increased to make up for it.

As stated yes and no. Alphas w/o medals yes, short sleeves w ribbons yes(can't remember but I think that's "charlies")
BUT; being blasted out in town in any uniform is unsat!

Thanks for ur boy! Good thing this Marine isn't being rung up the pole for conduct un becoming! That's Lcpl crap! Not something any NCO should ever be caught dead doing! Good reason to get busted! I never believed in sending your Marines to office hours or courts martial but that completely disgraced the unit, the Marine himself and the entire Corp.!

He'd be a Lcpl as soon as he sobered up if I had anything to say about it! As well as his liberty buddies! Marines don't disgrace themselves like that and sure the hell leave another Marine in such a state! Knock him the hell out, drag his ass home and call it a night, is much more acceptable behavior then leaving a fellow Marine is such a state to make an ass of himself and the entire Corp!

Dress Blues are not authorized for leave and liberty.

Now, if he came from a wedding or the Marine Corps Ball at a hotel, that is authorized on site and it has been known for Marines to conduct special ops into bars (not officially legal though).

The drunk and disorderly, well..........

Dress Blue Delta (short sleeve shirt with blue pants) is approved for Recruiters only on liberty.

Service A/B/C (Green pants and Khaki shirt and Green Jacket) approved for all leave and liberty.

Gentlemen: the final word on Dress Blues for liberty...directly from Marine Corps uniform Regulations, Chapter 2.....

3. Blue dress uniforms are designated as follows:

a. The blue dress "A" uniform includes the blue dress coat with large medals. This uniform will not be worn for leave or liberty.

b. The blue dress "B" uniform consists of the same items as blue dress "A" except that ribbons are worn in lieu of medals.

c. The blue dress uniform with long sleeve khaki shirt (without coat), and tie for male Marines and tab for female Marines, is designated as blue dress "C." Commanders may prescribe blue dress "C" as the uniform of the day for specified occasions or duties. Commanders may prescribe this uniform for honors, parades, and ceremonies on and off the military activity. This uniform is authorized for leave and liberty. The blue dress sweater may be worn as part of the blue dress "C" uniform at the option of the individual except on those occasions when the wear of the blue coat would be more appropriate. The sweater may be worn as part of the duty uniform both on and off the military installation and for commuting to and from work. The sweater may be worn as the uniform of the day and on leave and liberty but will not be worn for inspections, ceremonial formations, or parades.

d. The blue dress uniform with short sleeve khaki shirt (without coat) is designated as blue dress "D." Commanders may prescribe blue dress "D" as the uniform of the day for specified occasions or duties. During the winter uniform period, commanders may, at their discretion when the weather requires, authorize blue dress "D" as the uniform of the day. Commanders may prescribe this uniform for honors, parades, and ceremonies where climatic conditions preclude the comfortable wear of the blue dress "A" or "B" uniforms. This uniform is authorized for leave or liberty.

Thanks for the info guys! I realize that times have changed. My son was part of a group that probably included at least some field-graders. That young Marine had some high-priced help and nothing was reported. Hope he learned a big lesson!
