New Marines; Question;

I've got a question for "younger" Marines. What are the rifle qualifications now-a-days? What are phase one and phase two? My grandson has less than one month left to go. He has sent a short letter, I can understand that with so much to learn. But, he briefly mentioned pre-qualification score and qualifying expert in phase one. Is there a break between phases where they are in the field?
Thanks, CE

When I went through in the late 90s there was no break it was solid range time for I think it was three weeks. But rivers of sake on the rock have destroyed many of my memories.

The way it works is you have your tradition table 1 course of fire. That's the 200-500 yd course of fire with mixed positions and slow/rapid fire.

The Marine Corps has added tables 2-4. 3 and 4 are not graded, however, table 2 is now scored for a possible 100 points. So table 1 (250 points)+ table 2 (100 points)= 350 possible points.

Your grandson has received an expert on the table 1 which I believe is 220 points or greater. He will then do the table 2 course of fire and if he scores high enough, he will maintain his expert or be dropped down to sharpshooter or marksman. I don't know what the scale is off the top of my head.

They've finally instituted a combination of the combat skills and marksmanship skills. Some people are complaining that since your final score is a combination of the two, marksmanship badges no longer reflect true marksmanship skills.

While I agree that the scoring system might need to be reevaluated I'm glad that they include both types of training as a basic requirement.

In addition to the standard marksmanship straining that us old guys are familiar with the Marine Corps has now added these two requirements.

Sorry for the size

Table 2

Table 3

Thanks all;

Thanks for the updates and info. I knew things had changed. It's been forty-three years since I qualified with the M-14. Sharpshooter for me.

Update Expert;

Received another short letter from my grandson today. He qualified expert overall. He says they used optics in the second phase and that it may become standard practice. He didn't specify what type of optics. All the credit has to go to the instructors because all we ever let him shoot was shotgun.

Mentioned assault maneuvers and land navigation. He even likes MRE's, but we knew that going in because he ate them on camping trips and liked them.

The optics would be the ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) a 4x illuminated reticle scope made by Trijicon. The Marine Corps still teaches the implementation of iron sights during basic training, but thereafter, Marines qualify using the ACOG.
