ar-15 scope choice for Dad

Looking for some advice on scopes for my Dad. I have an Aimpoint on an ARMS forward mount on my AR-15, but that is irrelevant. My Dad "has never liked" red dot scopes or illuminated reticles. I finally figured out that it's because he's got red-green deficiency (color blind). That knocks out 90% of the scopes out there - red dots are red, and most illuminated reticles are green. He also "doesn't like" forward-mounted scopes - that part I chalk up to being set in his ways.

Dad recently went and bought himself a cheapo ($55 - $65) BSA (Chi-Com) 4-9x30 scope and mounted it on the carry handle of his HBAR. Looks OK, but it's worthless as a scope. Eye relief is so short, you'd end up with the charging handle up your nose if you got up close on it and fired it with a good sight picture. Thankfully, Dad didn't realize that the eye relief was off - he just shot it from normal position and decided that the poor sight picture was because he screwed up the installation. He went on his summer trip and left it with me to see if I could get it fixed.

Since two gunsmiths and one armorer have since told me that the scope and mount are junk, I replaced the carry handle mount with an ARMS mount. Now I need a scope for him - would like to find one by Father's Day.

When I rule out anything made by Red China or Russia, and rule out red dot sights, I'm finding very few choices on-line for a decent compact scope with sufficient eye relief, while still staying in the $200 - $300 range. The Leupold MR/T is nice, but pricey. Dad wants at least 4x magnification, and I want it to be a scope without an integral mount, so I can use ARMS quick-release rings.

Looking for suggestions on such a scope, preferably from personal experience. Thanks.

Give M14Dan a shout and see what he suggests. You can PM him through the board here. :D :D :D The other thing to do as a homework kind of thang would be to go to riflescopes.com and take a looksee at what they have to offer, but before you buy, check with Dan and see if he can beat the price ;)

I like my Leupold VX-II 2-7X33mm I mount it on my M4orgery for accuracy testing it was around $300 and has enough eye releif at 2X an 7X that I don't even need to change my cheek weld. I kepp my nose to the charging handle like I was trained though ;)
