223 Loads

My preferred load is 24.5gr of Varget with a 69gr Sierra seated to mag length. I've used Winchester small rifle and cci primers. That same load with an 80gr Sierra seated long also works very well on the long line. Hope this helps and good shooting.

The go to load for years was 24.5 gr 4895 in LC cases, and 69 gr SMKs. Everyone had their favorite primer (mine was Rem BR) for this load and all worked well. Varget, being slightly slower than 4895, might not allow you to get enough powder in the case to achieve the same fps for long range shots.

I've always used H-4895 in the AR and the M-1A. If I miss the X ring, it's me, not the powder at fault.

Those CCI's are pretty hot, hotter than other magnum small rifle powders. I would not exceed 25 grains of Varget with 69's, and then only in a NM rifle. Had some pressure issues with the #41 in my 16 inch AR's that was a mild load in my RRA NM rifle. I prefer the Rem 7.5 or Wolf primers.

I just picked up a bulk package of these Hornady bullets at Knob Creek and I am near completion of my new reloading room and bench. I hope to get some reloading done soon!!!

I'm really starting to like IMR-8208 XBR in 5.56 but I haven't loaded a lot of it yet.

Centered around 23.3 of 8208 is good for short range.

Back in the day (1990s) I used 21.5 grains of IMR 4198 with Winchester primers under a 55 gr FMJBT in LC brass, I looked in my new load book to find out that this load is 1.5 grains over the max now. The load does not produce pressure signs in an AR but it does crater primers in a REM 700.

25 or 25.5gr of Varget with a 69gr match bullet has been popular with service rifle shooters for years. See which works best for you.

I kept in simple and ran with 77's for everything except for the 600 yard line.

Old Sarge if Varget is what you got then Varget is what you use. My HBAR seems to do better with moderate loads. For 68/69's and up I am using AA2520 that i have had for almost 20 years. On my last 6 lbs.
Like anything else work up loads to find most accurate for you and your gun. Like Captain America said IMR 4895 works great also.
Heavy HBAR long shots are fun through a scope. Some days you can watch vapor trails.

Yes, I have a 8lb. can of Varget and figured to use it in my AR's and I have a bunch of IMR4895 to use in my M14's. Gotta get reloading soon !!!!

I've haven't been loading .223/5.56 for very long, actually only almost recently. So I will get back to a answer for this question later on, after I've done more research.

25gr of varget with 68 hornadys and 69smk & noslers out of a 1/7 white oak service rifle upper. They shoot better than I can hold.

Well, I finally got my new reloading room and bench about done. Al least done enough so I can get reloading. Range report to follow very soon.

Wow, where does the time go??? I haven't gotten around to reloading for my AR's yet, but I hope to real soon. I did load up a bunch of .30-06 and got my 7.62 brass sorted out and trimmed. Man, having to trim all of that brass sure is time consuming...
