A friend of mine had one. He hated it. I will say that he is a bit picky though. He could not get it to shoot less than 5" groups at 100yds. It did run well (no malfunctions). I never got to fire it so I am not/cannot speak from direct experience. He was very disapointed.

All things Robinson Arms M96 are covered here:

http://www.biggerhammer.net/m96/

I had one at least 10 years ago and dumped it...a lot of good ideas and a lot of Eugene Stoner-inspired design ideas...moa accuracy was hopelessly out of reach with the quick-detach barrel,

some QA production issues...promised options that never surfaced...a well intended company but one that got limited traction with the weapon in either the commercial marketplace of the militaries of the world marketplace

and while you're there you can check out the SIG AMT page...talk about upping the ante on your rifle addictions

I had one and loved it, wish I had never traded it off. It wasnt meant to be an MOA tack driver but on a man sized target out to 300 yards or so, it did the job, and then some.

Only wish I'd kept her.

The 5.56 XCR is a very nice weapon, a friend has one and I have fired it many times. Robinson is also working on a .308 model rifle but they have been talking about it for a couple of years now and have not come out with the model yet. Although I have talked with a regular at my range who has test fired their prototype and he says that it seems like a nice rifle.

I have both the recon and top feed(bren gun) versions. Their accuracy is just as good or better than my Colt AR15s.I get 1.5 inch groups out of the top feed and 2 inch out of the recon(it came with factory flash suppressor) at 100 yards. The recon weights 8.2 pounds and the top feed has got to be pushing over 10 pounds,so they're heavy compared to a AR15. Robinson Arms no longer sells part for them so I don't shoot them but maybe once a year. Robinson Arms produced well made firearms (M96) that within 5 years they no longer produced or sold replacement parts for, which is why I WILL NEVER BUY another Robinson Arms product.
I should add that I WON'T SELL the Recon or Top feed either as they are the best shooting .223s I've ever owned.

Thanks from 37thguy

+1 - I have one that's mint & i love to shoot it BUT choose not to because of the lack of spare parts for them, XCR owners take note!!

I own a M96 Recon also. I love it. I think it is dang accurate for a carbine. Very, very reliable. I talked with Robinson Armament the other day and they said the only way you will get spare parts is if something on the rifle fails you can send it in and they will fix it. They also said that sometime this year they hope to restart production on M96 parts so that people like us can have spare parts on hand. Some thing happened with another project and they had to stop production on M96 stuff to take care of their current problem. The rifle is solid, durable, and hella fun to shoot. I wouldn't own a different carbine. Ergonomically it is perfect. So hopefully they get back on track and start making extra stuff for us cause I can not, not shoot it. Just too much fun. My .02 cents. Hope this helps.

Has it really been 5 1/2 years since this post. I just finished wiping down the Recon and the Top Feed and reputting them in the back of the gun safe. Haven't shot them in 6-7 years.

I had a Recon model, it was an interesting carbine. It shot well with premium heavier bullet weights. It was a spray and pray with 55gr ball. I did have a few problems with the op rod. I also sent mine back for a safety recall and had it back fairly quickly and their customer service was pretty good. I sold it because it wasn't a vast improvement over any of the ARs I had and it needed more expensive ammo.
