Please rec DPMS style 308 upper and Barrel.

Good morning all. I'm starting my AR10 build and I need to be pointed in the right direction. I have a POF 308 lower and I need a a DPMS upper. POF stripped uppers are as hard as unicorn teeth to find, please recommend a good billet 308 DPMS upper. Also I know zero about AR10 barrels. Are the barrels all the same for DPMS , Armalite, and LR308? What brand should I look at? I'm looking for a 18"-20" barrel. I'd like a 1" or lower group build. Don't need a 1/2" moa 20lb boat anchor.

Thank you all!!!!

I too looked into the possibility of building an AR10, and sorry to say I was cautioned against the idea in favor of buying a complete factory rifle. Reason is there seems to be no standards, i.e. Mil-Spec between manufacturers, so, you may run into problems fitting a POF lower to a DPMS upper, likewise with other parts like internals.

Wish I had better news.

Mega upper and JP barrel. As ripper said I'd just buy a mega maten matched set to build your rifle. They are great.

I've been leaning toward Aero/Criterion.

From what I read when researching my build, POS lower will not work with DPMS upper unless you use bushings in the takedown holes.

Best of luck

Exactly, got the bushings, I was all about an all POF build until my father in law had tons of issues with his. To be honest I still might go with an all POF build and purchase one of their complete uppers. Just researching what is out there.

You speak the truth here. But it's not as daunting as you suggest. They key is to ensure you are purchasing compatable components. As long as you research EVERYTHING this is all really easy stuff.

For instance I'd recommend you buy a paired upper and lower. Some lowers have proprietary parts so buying the same manufacturers LPK might be wise too. As for bolt I always to to match the BCG to the barrel manufacture if they make both.

As for the rail, just need to match the upper rail night low/high for DPMS.

That's what I used on my build. Last year I found a hell of a deal for a paired upper/lower for $210. Wish I would have bought at least one more

All ofthe current crop of NEW, commercially available AR 10 rifles are basically AR 10/ AR 15 HYBRIDS, which use as many AR 15 parts as possible. While there are several ( ?too many?) modern AR 10/AR 15 manufacturers who all seem to have their own idea of what a modern AR 10/15 HYBRID should be, after waiting decades for a commercial AR 10 that was true to the original STONER design,, I finally compromised and settled for the DPMS pattern rifles.

I have owned four DPMS AR 10 rifles. These were all factory builds and all were superbly accurate and three were totally reliable.

The Remington R25 was built by DPMS, and had a free floated FLUTED HBAR, with rifle length gas take off. They all.had HORRRRRRIBLE triggers. Worst I've seen on any of my dozens of AR'S, HEAVY and creepy. Forget about "single " or two stage pull ... more like four or five stage. They also came with the notoriously unreliable DPMS metal magazines. Installng an aftermarket trigger or working over the factory triggers was REQUIRED, not merely an option, as was using only the excellent plastic Pmags. These rifles were all MOA or better shooters, with factkry .308 Win ammo. One particular R25 shot MOA and SUB-MOA with FIVE different factory loads, ranging from 125 gr to 200 gr. IMPRESSIVE!

My DPMS LR308B was capable of 5/8"f five shot 100 yd groups with some brands of 168 gr HPBT MATCH ammo, BUT IT WAS FUSSY ABOUT AMMO. Because the shorter barreled LR308B has the gas take off at the CARBINE location, the gas pressure is HIGHER. In fact, some times TOO HIGH, with primers loosening with some factory .308 Win loads. Also, that model had a very tight Target/Match chamber, and 7.62 NATO ammo was not recommened. With steel case Chinese 7.62 BALL, fired cases would get stuck in the chamber, requiring "mortaring" to clear.

DPMS style barrels are available from several manufacturers in several variations in barrel profiles and length. I would recommend you go with a barrel that has the longer take off position for the gas port. This will result in a smoother running, more reliable buid.

PS: I also had 3 dozen of the MOST EXCELLENT old ORIGINAL DUTCH built MILSPEC AR 10 rifles. Here in Canada, there is some interest in developing NEW AR 10s that are closer to the original design. NEA in Ontario is doing research and development in this area.
