Need some AR advice

I'm looking to add a flat top AR to my safe, . . . in 5.56 caliber.

I already have an AR, . . . . triangle hand guards, integrated carrying handle, bayo lug, 3 finger flash hider, and A2 buttstock, . . . set up for and is used when we have a Vietnam combat veteran funeral.

It also is a darn good shooter.

I want to get a flat top AR upper to put on it, . . . wanting to put a thermal scope on that upper.

What questions should I ask of the sellers to make sure the upper I get will be one that will drop on my lower and just plain "work" without any messing around.

I'd like to pull the pins, . . . take off one upper, . . . put on the other, . . . and go do what needs to be done.

I'm building myself a coyote gun, . . . nightforce of course.

May God bless,
Dwight

The AR really is the Lego/Mr. Potato Head of the gun world.. Like brycom1 said, if it's milspec, or sold by a reputable dealer, it's going to be good to go.

Windham Weaponry
BCM (Bravo Company)
Palmetto State Armory
Stag (Only vendor to produce a LH model currently)
Aero
DPMS
Bushmaster
Colt
FN

lol, I mean, take your pick - there's probably 40 other vendors I'm skipping over.

As others have said, any mil-spec upper should easily fit your lower but you may have a little wobble between them. If so, you can just put one of these in your lower to tighten thing up.

In a pinch, I've used one or two foam earplugs 1stuffed into the rear of the lower as temporary solution as well

I did a little Google search and it looks like JP Rifles is now making "micro fit" oversized pins that would help take out any slop between the upper and lower (these look like they would require some minor fitting, so they aren't exactly "plug and play). I'd probably stay with the ear plugs or shim approach to avoid having to ream out the pin holes on the lower

they are just longer, and have screws to lock them in.if they were oversize, they would also need a reamer to run through the hole.

I tried the same thing. Thought it would be SOOOOO easy. Not!!! Make sure you can get your upper off before you start shopping.
If you have the 2 screw head stud you will need a bushing for the new standard pin connection. It's available but I don't know who sells it. If it presently has a pin connection, it should be an easy fit. Any standard pin should work. I say SHOULD, but I'm no expert.
My problem was getting the screw heads off. It acted like it was spot welded.
I gave up and bought a PSA lower blem, before I damaged the screw heads. There may be a secret to removing the screws but I never found it.

Awards Showcase

Dwight,

If you want just a Coyote gun, I can hook you up. I have a take off barrel in 20 inch service rifle or even with a longer match rifle barrel, yours for free Take off barrels from competition guns still shoot the magasine fed ammo great, they were taken off when the shooter starts losing X at 600 with the single loaded ammo, like the 80 grain class ammo usually seated 2.470 COL or longer.

These barrels have Wylde chamber, pretty much the standard chamber these days, all you need to purchase is the complate flat top upper (with forward assistant dust cover), floating handguard of your choice, gas block, gas tube, and a bolt. You can use the old bolt carrier and charging handle.

Is your existing rifle a Colt? if yes are the front and rear takedown pins the same size?

Actually it is a "lego" gun, . . . parts and pieces from anywhere they could be found, . . . put together by a USMC guy over near Dayton, Ohio, . . . I got it from him, . . . turned it into a Vietnam look-alike except for the forward assist.

Had to go look, . . . lower is a Stag, . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

Dwight, PSA has sales on complete uppers all the time. Give them a Call them tell them what you want to do and what you have and they will ship one right to your door. Or you could call Stag they will do the same thing. PSA has really good prices. I have one set up for yotes and the upper and lower have a little play but it's a sub MOA gun with hornady vmax ammo.
Palmetto state armoury has 2 complete uppers on sale today that would work for you,$349.99 with free shipping on one of them.
My 2 cents.

Thanks from dwight55

The guy in the video is Mr Monotone and I fell asleep watching it.
I wish people could just get to the point of the video and not give us their family history.
I have never had a upper and lower not fit properly but I guess there must be AR's out there that don't fit together well.
I've had 30 or so AR's over the years and fitment has never been an issue.
