M16A1....still desirable?

So I know a not too long ago there seemed to be renewed interest in the M16A1. folks trying to track down those hard to find early usgi parts to make that clone project/ rebuild happen at long last. what is the consensus now, are we over the early M16 incarnations and onto the 15/A4 for good?

They will always have a place with collectors and target shooters alike.

I built one several years ago using an original surplus colt upper with original barrel. At the time there was guy that had several uppers at a great price. The lower I had to improvise with a lower that was done in the Colt gray. Hand guards and butt stock were from original A1 that I picked up from a guy that had these. That being said I love my clone and she shoots well

I'm asking because it seems you have to pretty much offer to give the parts away to get rid of them. and to me the M16A1 seems like it would be a pretty desirable piece as far as historical significance.

Still lots of people making clones of older m16 rifles and carbines. My problem is getting a A1 lower.

Well.......you could...theoretically speaking. just never ever tell anyone. but who wants a FA/select-fire they can't show off right? maybe Ol' Donnie will get the lefties straightened out for us and we can start building some good stuff!

Yeah the lowers definitely seem to be fewer and farther between than all the other bits and pieces so far. I've got 2 69ish-71ish?? colt A1 barrels (one brand new in the box.) and a few sets of handguards but none of the other goodies

Nodak Spud makes replica upper and lowers of the various Colt models. They are now shipping June/July orders from 2016. So you can see they are pretty backed up. Also check out retroblackrifle.com for research.

Ripper, I congratulate you on having an A1 style build.
But that is an A2 lower, A2 pistol grip and appears to be an A2 butt plate.

That one is exactly like the first one I bought with no foreward assist or fence around the mag release button
