But that is an A2 lower, A2 pistol grip and appears to be an A2 butt plate.
Yeah I know, Good eye! except you didn't catch the interesting part, which is an A1 upper with an A2 brass deflector, and, the buttstock & plate are late model A1 like I carried in the mid 1980's.

I wasn't anal about this build being all correct, I used some of what I had, which was mostly FN USGI from Bushmaster's old days, then I called them up and asked if they had any A1 uppers, and they sent me that one also from FN, then I got lucky cruising a gun show and found a NIW A1 barrel & handguards and guess what? They're also FN! So although not 100% correct, it's almost 100% FN.

Near as I've been able to ascertain, FN was contracted to supply replacement parts for the M16A1 mostly going to Taiwan, and you could find these surplus parts in the mid 1990's when I put this together...

I can tell you I carried both. I liked the M16A1 just a bit better than the M16A2, although the sights were a step up, really not a lot there to be impressed by, they beefed the barrel up at the muzzle end because GI's would use it for a pry bar (Yes we did), but, still the same profile under the handguards which were a bit better too and less prone to cracking. The worst aspect of the A2 was the trigger pull due to that 3 round burst, what a trigger! And it caused qualification scores to go down. Also when using burst if you pulled the trigger once and got 2 rounds off, your next pull was a single and so on until the trigger cogs reset, we hated it so much, we requested to bend the springs out of the way during Desert Storm...

The A1/C7 the Canadians use has the case deflector.

Actually I did but. But Canada used the upper with a brass deflector in their A1 C7

You still have a good use rifle that I am sure you are proud of.

I did not know that, thanks for enlightening me! Now I wonder where Bushmaster got it from and who made it? I had assumed it was FN as most of the parts I was getting from them back in those days, but, always suspected there was something "Funny" with this one as it looked like the maker code had been removed before a refinish job. Cool! A Canadian mil-spec upper receiver, guess I'll go Google it.

Edit : Ya, I'm leaning towards it being an A1/C7 from Colt Canada. Under close inspection under the rear sight, behind the ejection port, and on the side of the gas tube hole all the markings were definitely removed and refinished where they would have been. Guessing Bushmaster didn't want to be selling Colt so they scrubbed them...

Thanks from Pipestoneinc

Me and mine, summer of 84' , mine had the "weed catcher" flash suppressor as well, covered by my cover but it's there. I see a guy at local shows that has all kinds of A1 parts, unsure of any options for lowers though.

I agree with you 100%. I started with the A1. When we were issued the A2 no one liked them.

Thanks from Pipestoneinc

The A1 beats the heck out of this new fangled tacticool crap. I built both of mine out of parts kits; an A1 version 20+ years ago and recently, an XM177E2 on a NDS lower. VN era retro rocks!

Thanks from brianns and Pipestoneinc
