Found one locally.
Haven't touched such a thing since '89.
Is it a decent shooter?

It comps to what is on gun broker, which for the same money, a nice new rifle could be purchased.
Is the preban thing all that significant?

serial # ST0059XX

Thanks.

Awards Showcase

I have 2, both are good shooters. I'd buy the newer one with a flat top receiver.

If you're not dead set on a "prancing pony" and don't have to have a preban there are a lot better options out there if you're looking for a good shooter.

I built this about 9 months ago for a couple hundred less than what that Colt comps for on GB.

New SR finally together

I guess it all boils down to what you want, a CMP legal service rifle, match/varmint rifle, plinker, tacticool boat anchor, or something in between?

I've never seen a FA on the firing line. I mostly see White Oak, Keystone, or Compass Lake equipment in the AR ranks.

Thanks from ColdWarPigGnR

Look at that!!!!
Keystone is 16 miles from house...........

I think I'm looking for higher end plinker.

Depends on that particular gun I would think.

Any thing Colt holds its value and pre 94 helps a little.

I'd start there then. John may be able to hook you up with some unadvertised specials.

I owned at least 4 Colt 6600s and they all shot well.

Is it a large or small pin? If large, it limits the uppers you can use in the future.

I looked at buying an AR as a two part deal. Found a decent lower(S&W), threw a good trigger into it. Then looked for a good flat top upper with rails for flip up sights, light/laser on the bottom, and co-witness optics, which my old eyes need. Now I have 16" carbine, and 20" bull barrel target uppers. It's nice to have the same lower/trigger.

The pre ban is no longer applicable for almost all mfg.'s today offer what once would have been called pre ban, it is another AR15 other than the Colt name which is somewhat of a plus. Accuracy for most AR's is very good with the right loads and no reason to think the one you are looking at would not be equally as accurate. Can't tell for sure from the photos but does it have a bayonet lug?? Colt in anticipation of a ban coming down the road, which it did, started modifying their rifles hoping that would exclude them from the ban. No lug, big holes versus mil spec, left material in lower so drop in sear could not be used, etc. As in most factory AR's the trigger needs attention or replaced and would think it should be an easy 1moa rifle or better, AR's are capable of very good accuracy.
