Does anyone have a link to this place?
Good catch, I think you are right, IMO that makes a good stock even better as a user. A1 buttplates are known for developing cracks around the hinge area.

Package as it arrived. Sealed up tight.
It doesn't have the upper screw. I ordered a DPMS receiver extension kit.
Will I need an A1 specific upper screw?

Got the stock mounted. Had to "professionally"shorten and cold blue the upper screw, didn't take long.
I need the shine gone, it's too reflective.
Rattle can it or Cerakote? Scuff with 2000 grit paper?

Google Charley's surplus. I forgot what section it was under.

ScotchBrite green pad that you can find in kitchen supplies, used to clean dishes. It doesn't remove material like sandpaper but will dull the shine.

Did you get this A1 stock for a Retro/Old School build?

Just got it for the length.
Waiting on my midlength barrel to ship.
Something like this. Not mine. Just where I'm heading

Don't give up looking for it. They are there. I ordered one last Friday and got it a couple days ago (mine looked like it was never used.)

The search engine at Charley's is nothing to brag about. I just spent 10 minutes or so looking for them using the words butt stock, M16, M16A1, A1, butt, stock, rifle, etc. with no look. I've been through pages and pages without seeing the butt stock. I guess I'm lucky I found it last week, but don't remember how I did it.

Ordered one today myself. Gerald answered the phone and was very nice as opposed to some guys on the phone.

The butt plate looks like an a2 from the pic in the thread? Can the OP confirm?

It's not an A2 stock. It's about 3/4" shorter than an A2 stock.

You can use the same buffer tube, spring and buffer as you would with an A2 stock though.

You'll either need an A1 screw (upper) or take an A2 screw and cut the end off, then smooth off the rough edges. The A2 screw wills stick through the end of the buffer tube and keep the buffer from moving completely rearward.

Here's my mid winter build with my A1 stock from Charley's surplus. As other's have said, it's just more comfortable with that little bit shorter stock (vs. the A2 stock).

Nice rifle.

I was making comment on the butt plate itself. From the side it looks textured like an a2 butpltplate as opposed to the smooth a1 butt plate. Either way is fine, just curious.

This is the rifle. I believe it's a diamond texture on the trapdoor buttplate

yep, sounds like an A2 butt plate--the A1 plates were smooth to my knowledge., Still a nice stock and great price. A1 butt plates are cheap and everywhere.

Received mine today. Sealed in a clear wrap material. The butt plate is an A2. Overall the stock is excellent plus shape. The sling loop is either new or reparked. You might find another such stock in better shape but you will look for awhile IF you find one and you will pay more for it.

Thank you!

I found this forum while performing a random search for surplus A1 buttstocks. I just wanted to thank you guys for helping me find the best deal/condition A1 stock I've ever come across. I called Charley's on Tuesday to inquire about the stocks as I was unable to find them on the website. (He later informed me that they are not on the website.) He had one left so I jumped. Mine also has the A2 buttplate, metal trapdoor, new sling swivel, matte black, and in much better condition than I imagined.

Thanks again for the heads-up!

Thanks from dbb1776
