Bought this rifle/carbine some months ago and only shot it a few times just for function testing but just spent most of the day with it using different loads and both issue/iron sights, Fast Fire II, and scope. Loads ranged from basic 55gr plinking bullets, SMK 69gr., and some IMI 62gr bullets. Accuracy for all loads were about what you would expect from the rifle, it's not a match rifle, and ranges varied from 50yds. to 200yds. Used the P Mags that came with the rifle as well as some 20rnd. Colt mags and all functioned fine. As most factory 15 type triggers are(read terrible) it is useable but needs to be corrected or "tuned" if you will and have done several over the years so not a big problem to take care of in the near future. The issue flip up sights are useable and do wish the rear had Elevation adjustment instead of the front sight post needing raised or lowered w/ the tool provided. Shot close to 200rnds of various loads/powder and had not been properly cleaned from previous little shooting and curious as to how dirty it would be after this many rounds.
Used setting No. 2 for gas and upon stripping to clean there was some carbon soot, build up on the piston, but actually not very much at all and cleaned up easily. Buffer, bolt carrier, bolt, upper reciever showed no wear marks and were very clean compared to previous experiences with gas impingement versions. Never did care for those 6 position stocks and did read in the manual that you can substitute for std. A2 with this rifle which I will get around to doing soon. The overall length of the rifle is not an issue with me and used to the old style stock. Would mention from bag/rest the rifle gave groups of 10 rounds @ 100yds of 1.5moa and at the 200yd line gave close to 2.5moa and that was regardless of ammo so figured that was good performance. As expected the SMK 69gr gave a bit better groups than the others. Friend of mine has a new Compass Lake Engineering "service grade" upper due next week or so and it has a Criterion 1/8 Chrome Moly barrel on it and is of A2 variety(wanted to duplicate something very near issue 'Nam era rifle,) lower is LRB w/ std. internals and we will compare the two when that arrives. Overall the Ruger 556 is of quality but a bit on the heavy side w/ all the rails plus the forward weight of the gas/piston assembly, and with Ruger's good service if needed, I consider it a keeper.
