What do you guys think of the 50 Beowulf?

Been thinking about a 50 Beowulf upper for my AR. I intend to use the AR as a short range defense carbine in a broken arrow situation, where as my M1 / M14 are real MBRs. The increased stopping power of a 300grain+ bullet appeals to me over a 55gr FMJ.. Anyone have one? Do they feed / work reliably? Or are they just a Fad?

Thanks
Justin

I've seen the carnage they produce and it is amazing. I would say a bit overkill for personal defense unless you're on the highway and need to stop a semi. They are darn cool tho

How many people do you know that own one?

In a SHTF scenario, ammo will be one of your most limiting factors as far as firearms are concerned. And .50Beowulf is one of those extremely uncommon rounds.

It's also the only reason I don't think rounds such as 6.5 and 6.8mm are also bad choices for SHTF. Good rounds, but to rare to be viable.

I have a 5.56mm upper now, so this would be an option for the rifle, I can always swap it back to 5.56 in a pinch. I reload so I would probably do that for this, since ammo is pricy and scarce..

The coolness factor is definitely a plus. I was most concerned on is it reliable, feeding those rounds, that is the only thing holding me back...

I prefer the 458 SOCOM.

You do not have to make ANY changes to a 223/5.56 lower.

The 458 SOCOM functions with unmodified 223/5.56 magazines.
20 rounders hold 7, 30 rounders hold 10 458 SOCOM's.

Since the 458S is a bottleneck case it feeds much better than the straightline 450Bushmaster or 50B.

It headspaces on the shoulder, not on the case neck.

There are many many more bullet choices in .458 diameter.

Edited for typo: The 30 round 223/5.56 magazines hold TEN 458 SOCOM's, not 18...

Thanks from 1100 tac and jbkf1003

I've got an Beowulf upper that I put together with an AR Stoner 16" barrel. After tweaking the extractor that came with the bolt/barrel I have still been having some trouble with it cycling consistently. It seems to be short stroking slightly so I decided that I need to open the gas port a little more. Haven't had a chance to test it yet after doing that last weekend. It has been a fun project and is an impressive cartridge. I have loaded 350g Hornaday XTP bullets at 1800fps which I think will end up being my standard load. I've also loaded some Hornaday 500g bullets at 1400fps. These loads are ballistically duplicates of what you would get out a S&W 500 handgun. Anything you hit is going to be hurting real bad! I've got a Burris red dot on it and it is easy to hit any decent sized target out at 200 yards. I haven't used it on animals yet but I hear it is lethal on elk. Magazines have been a little touchy. I have had the best luck so far with a Colt 20 rounder that I have tweaked the feed lips a bit to get the nose of the cartridge up a little. I have tried Magpul mags, modified and stock without much success. I haven't tried AA's yet. Check out http://www.beyond556.com/bboard/foru...-Bore-ARforum/ for more feedback.

I bought the Beowulf upper for my AR years ago. Also bought two cases of ammo to go with it. Way back when they first came out and were cheaper than now...

I LOVE my Wulf. Were I to have one weapon I would choose to take with me if the SHTF, it would be my Wulf. There are plenty of commercial "tests" and reports out there on the Beo. I decided to do my own test. I placed a level 3A vest over a 6x6 treated lumber post. The vest also had a steel trauma plate in the front center, and one in the rear center. I fired my Wulf from 20 yards, the 400g ball went through the front steel plate, through both front and rear of the kevlar vest, through the 6x6 post, and through the rear steel plate, and kept going. I've shot cinder block with brick faced walls with it, and blown them apart. They are a very hard hitting round, and very effective. This year I will be hunting with the Wulf, just to test her out on live targets. I've seen the results of boar hunting with the Wulf too. The research is out there, done by people that actually have and shoot the Wulf.

The only thing I didn't like about my Wulf was the A3 upper. I swapped that out for a nice A2 upper, modified the ejection port to handle the 50 casings, and it works really nice. Also, I use 20 round mags moslty due to no problems with functioning. I've only had a few FTF with her, because of trying old DX'd magazines I had laying around. As long as you check your mags before use, you should have no problems. If you shoot the Wulf, you will want one. Just a "heads up." Also, don't use cheap civvie collapsable stocks with the Wulf. It will eat them, breaking the pins that hold the stock open. Mil Spec should work. I've seen folks use those Viltor stocks too. I use a full A1 stock with a rubber recoil pad from a Garand on her. Works nice, and keeps me from having black sholder after a few boxes of fun.

for reloading data on the Wulf.

I don't own one, but my thoughts on it are that I definately need to have one.
I'm hoping to get a Beowulf and a 300 BO.

May want to look into the 300 blackout as well. It is like a AAA battery being shot at your target.

Beowulf isn't all that great for function from the few I've come accross. I'd seriously check out the 458 socom for a better all around thumper. Like it has been listed here on this thread it makes a little more sense.
