Lightweight barrels

My wife caught the AR bug.... but she says my M4gery is too heavy for her. Its a Spikes with their BAR quad rail. I see that BCM and Noveske both sell complete uppers with 14.5 lightweight barrels. I've never laid hands on one, is there really that much difference in weight for a tiny woman, also I've heard said they heat up too much too quickly. Is this true? Anyone gone down this road? Last thought, Daniel Defense makes a basic no frills M4. Are they any lighter than others?

THX

I have 2 lightweight 16" barrels and there is a noticeable difference. They do heat up quicker but nothing to worry about since the A1 used the same pencil barrel.

The DD M4 will be heavier since it uses an M4 barrel. Be sure the Noveske is the pencil barrel and not a cut down M4.

Copy that. Thx. I wondered about the DD only because their little motto says lighter, better or something to that effect. The Noveske is pencil. The Skinny carbine MOE. For price I'm leaning towards the BCM. Still hammer forged.

This "heating up" business is silly for us civilians. It won't make any difference unless you dump at least 5 - 30 round magazines + on full auto, something which we will rarely ever do. (Like never.)

Keep in mind that an M4 barrel is only heavier than a skinny "pencil" barrel from the front sight to the flash suppressor, where the heat is the least. The most heat is at the chamber, and an M4 barrel is exactly the same thickness there as a pencil skinny barrel. If you want fat, get an HBAR or SOCOM profile heavy barrel, which does nothing for a civilian except make your gun heavier.

For a lightweight carbine for the young lady, skip the massive quad rails, KISS, get a skinny 16" barrel with standard handguards and only add on what you (she) really need. A basic AR carbine is extremely light, weight comes from all the "gee whiz" gadgets you bolt onto it.

Want something light and fun for the wife to shoot?

Yes, there's a tax stamp potentially involved... but the 11" AR-57 upper with with either a pistol lower or an SBR lower is wicked fun, fast follow up shots, and weighs in less than any standard AR with a 50 round mag could imagine (~5 lbs fully loaded).

Yes, 5.7x28 is more expensive to shoot, but it's a nice low recoil round.

Here is mine on a tax free pistol lower and a red dot sight.

Here are a couple of links that might help you:

First, a BCM weight comparison chart:

http://www.03designgroup.com/technot...ht-comparisons

Some of the results listed here will surprise you.

Second, a rail weight comparison chart:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?...DQ&output=html

I'm going down the same road. I'll start a thread on my process and post up some updates as well.

To answer your other question - yes, they heat up quickly, and they also cool down quicker than the heavier barrels.

Good hunting!

And here's what the doctor ordered, and it's really is a great deal. Colt AR6720.

ArmyCPT I was just looking at that 6720 maybe 5 minutes before I looked back to this page and saw your post. Great minds think alike!! She just wants Magpul MOE on it.

Ditch the rails and such, and it'll be fine, that said a LW barrel will shift POI with firing, even as a civilian PERIOD. I had an A1, even slow fire(1 round every second or so) as I proggressed groups would always open up as the barrel heated up, still accurate enough but it does happen

Build her a basic M4 type No rails, No heavy Optics and a government profile barrel or if desired pencil barrel and she should be A OK. I had to remove all my extras from my m4 for my son, no biggie now

I changed my mind. I just bought a Colt LE6920 from Clyde Armory. Too good of a price to pass up.

Going to add a DD Omega rail, Surefire X300 Ultra, and a few other things (like my T-1, for instance).
