I put together an M16A2 upper and a (real, but shot-out) M4 barrel just for plinking when I was in the sandbox (one of the perks of running an Air Force Security Forces Armory). We wound up on the receiving end of a bit of 'excess' or unaccounted-for ammo, and it was easier to just shoot it up than it was to turn it in.
I used to shoot my carbine at cyclic rate until it got hot, then I'd let it cool down and start all over. Never any problems with the M4 barrel in a standard A2 upper; also no bolt bounce, or anything else bad that's supposed to happen.
And BTW, I have no idea when or where that barrel sustained the wear that it showed, but it swallowed the gage.
