Trying Something Different-ACOG

Tonight online I purchased an ACOG for my M4. I've been an Aimpoint guy in the past, but I'm trying something different. It is the smaller TA33-8 with the green chevron. I like that particular ACOG because it does have forgiving eye relief and it seems to be pretty fast for me. I really didn't want to give up the Aimpoint speed, but I wanted some magnification while having some more precision. We'll see how it flys. More on it later.

Just looked it up on the website, looks pretty nice. Didn't have those acog gizmos when I was in the service. I have to say these new devices are begining to appeal to me more and more. I'm slapping together an m4 carbine and planed on setting it up with an a2 upper. Now you have me thinking. At this point the last thing I need to add to the list is another scope. Your killing me Chris!

When I was back in uniform laying under the stars at night I often thought the A2 would be perfect if it was a little shorter, it had some sort of removable handle making it a flatop for optics, a way to adjust the stock for wearing a flak jacket and that silly 3 round burst was full auto. Flash forward, presto chango, and poof we have the M4.

Warren don't go backwards. Even if yours wears the carrying handle for a while and you're using the iron sights, don't make it a fixed A2. A2 fixed carrying handles are so last century.

BTW I to can't swing it right now, but the S&B shortdot 1-8 or even just the 1-4 would be sweetness. Like a gift from god on one of these rifles. That is what I plan for the new Colt 6940p rifle. "P" for piston. It's a must have. Have a nice Thanksgiving.

What's the story with the piston set up? Is it easy to install on a carbine? Who makes the kit? I should be getting a Krieger carbine barrel I order a couple of months ago real soon. All I have so far is a ga ssa trigger and lower. I'm wondering if that piston deal is a viable option for this build. It has a carbine length gas port 16 inches. Wanted midlength but it wasn't an option from them. I don't know why they don't budge on stuff like that.

You've got me thinking on an ACOG for my next build as well.

Damn you.

I have the TA33 with amber chevron on my AR, and love it.

With some practice the Bindon Aiming Concept is awesome, and has the potential to be just as fast a red dot. I found the best way to practice that was to get a flip up cover for the front lens and use both eyes open with the cap closed, and once you get used to that you can take the cap off and your brain will automatically choose whether or not to use the magnification. It is surprisingly more effective than most people realize.

Plus the ranging reticle is spot on, even with my hand-loaded 55grn rounds, I only have to hold over the cross to the top of the target all the way out to 600 yards.

Thanks from jmoore

Well that question is a little out of my knowledge base. I know there are kits and plenty of piston rifles out there. But to my knowledge they all are different. Nothing is standardized. I've always felt Colt took the Armalite rifle and made it something. Everything is a spin off. If Colt ever had a piston driven rifle maybe everything else would be standardized based off the Colt design. Colt took a long time bring a piston to market. I knew when they first made the new 6940 they had one prototype in piston. I had hoped it would come to market. Well it is, and from what little I know of it, it's special. It proprietary I'm quite sure, but I have high hopes for it. I will have one as soon as they are made available and I can swing it.

The Bindon Aiming Concept does work. I've slapped on a TA33 and ran around the gunshop with an AR. It works pretty well with the TA33 and the 3.5x models. They simply have the eye releif necessary to make it happen. I find it easier with the TA33 though because it unit itself is more streamline vs the 3.5x model. The 4x models are horrid though. I cannot apply this concept at all with them, the eye releif just isn't there. They are so unforgiving and hard for me to pick up a sight picture, if I'm not spot on finding it.

I'm pretty excited to have the TA33 so I really can give it a go. Just an occasional person at the range letting me try it some or dinking around at the gunshop isn't real world experiance. It is going on my personal patrol rifle. Hopefully here in the near future I can finally land myself a job on some police department. With it I want something that is going to work the best for me, in most situations. I feel the TA33 might do that. I got it for a good price, LNIB, so I'll not be out anything if I find it not to my liking in resale. It's a win/win.

I bet that colt set up is going to be expensive. I googled the piston set up and found two for around 250. I'll give you a shout when I know more about them. Now I'm thinking flat top with a piston set up.

I'm going to guess the rifle be close to 2k or so. It really doesn't matter to me the cost unless it is why out of line. The new Colt is a landmark rifle for them and probably things to come. I want it...

Rifles designed with a piston setup are usually pretty good. Add-on piston setups... not the direction I would go myself. You're changing where the force is applied and how it all works together with an add-on setup.

Depends on the company making the piston set up. I run an Adams Arms piston conversion on my everyday carry M4 and have never had an issue with reliability or function.

edited to add-Adams makes a replacement bolt carrier that negates the tilt issue

Piston is not needed, adds weight and they are all different. The TA33 is a great little combat sight.

So Colt's finally jumping into the piston market? Interesting to say the least!

ACOG's with BAC - serious business. They work well for "non-permissive environment specialists" (props to Travis Haley for that one).

my 5.56!!!
LWRC 16" M6A3/4 position adjustable piston
ACOG ECOS Red Center Illumination & 4.0 MOA RMR Sight
Magpul UBR, AFG 2 and MIAD
BFG Padded VCAS sling

I love the ACOG. I had an EoTech on my rifle. The EoTech is on my 870 tactical now and I will never go back. NO BATTERIES, EVER.
