I go shoot several times a year in Charlotte in a Military rifle only match. 13" X 8 " steel plates at 200 Yds Irons only. I have normally shoot my Colt AR15A2 Hbar in this match. Very accurate rifle . But I wanted to switch things up a little and in kinda honor of my dad take my new enough LRB M14. It is a standard in all Winchester parts. I had them barrel and headspace it and I assembled the rest myself. I shot a 13.17 second volley with this rifle last Saturday. My personal best time. It got me 4th place out of about 35 shooters. The lady was on. I got hung up on one dern target and it cost me about 2 extra seconds. The times was some thing like this 1st place 11.7 2nd & 3rd was in the 12's . I wish I had a digital camera and knew how to post it. I got this lady in a Turd brown USGI synthetic stock. It's a plain Jane no frills Battle Rifle. Just like I wanted. Just to add I also have a Armscorp / H&R rifle, A Norinco / TRW rifle, and a SAI Loaded rifle. The LRB is my favorite. Just thought I'd share, WarDawg
Great job...... sounds like the rifle is a no frills but effective battle rifle. The fact that you shot this to honor your Dad sounds like a great and honorable story. Would you share this with us and tell us a bit more about the LRB?
OK here is the course of fire from the guy who puts it on. John Glover ( Moses ) over at the FAL files.
Here is the course of fire
You can shoot with or without a sling, or you can use a bipod, or some kind of front rest (i.e. ammo can, sand bag etc.)
The targets are 13"X 8" and are set up tall i.e. 13"high 8" wide
Military style rifle match
Iron sights only (you can use optics but you will not be eligible for awards)
Any current or obsolete semi-auto or bolt military style rifle can be used
FAL, G3, M1 Garand , AR 15, M1A/M14, AK, O3A3 etc.
The match will consist of 5 separate stages
Stage one (Drop eight)
will consist of
8 steel targets that must be knocked down from 200 yds (targets are 8" x 13")
Fastest time wins
There will be 32 targets so four people can participate before having to reset the targets
This stage will be shot from 200yds
60 second time limit
Each person will shoot this stage 2 times
Stage two (Standing)
Will consist of shooting STANDING
3 steel targets that must be knocked down from 200 yds (targets are 8" x 13")
Fastest time wins 45 second time limit
Stage three (Bolt gun drop 4)
Bolt Gun drop 4 (this stage is optional)
Will consist of shooting 4 steel targets (using a bolt gun) that must be knocked down from 200 yds (targets are 8" x 13")
Fastest time wins 45 second time limit
or
(Garand drop eight)
Will consist of shooting 8 steel targets (using a Garand) that must be knocked down from 200 yds (targets are 8" x 13")
Fastest time wins. 60 second time limit
Stage Four (3 man team)
Will consist of a three man team
Shooting 16 steel targets at 200 yds (targets are 8" x 13")
Fastest time wins
Stage five (Sniper)
Will consist of
One steel target to be knocked down at 300 yds (target is 8" x 13")
Only one shot allowed
This is an elimination round miss and your out! Hit and you move to the next round.
You'll probably need 100 rds but bring at least 150 to be safe.
I came in 4th in the Drop 8 . I took 1st in the Garand . My team ( TEAM STACKED ) ( what we call ourselves ) took 1st in the team event. I didn't place in the standing or sniper. ;( LOL.... There are some very good shots in this event. Moses always being the guy to beat day in and day out. He's a pretty cool guy, and does a good job on running this shoot.
I bought about 4 sets of everything CMP had in the M14 flavor in about 2000. I saw a guy selling a New Winchester M14 barrel for $100 shipped. This was in about 2002 . I jumped on it. It came in and guaged ( throat )New actually gauged 0 with my gauges. Up to a 2 is suppose to be new from what Ive read. Anyhow I gather up all my winnie best parts and sent the barrel and bolt off to LRB for them to install on there standard receiver. The rest is history.... I got the stocks from Orion 7 years back for ( I think ) $15 ea ( new ) . I got 3 of them for under $50 I know . Damn how times change...
My dad passed away on Christmas day 2001 . I got into Garands after he pass on basically because I was looking at his old Army album. It had a lot of Garands and BARs in it. He served 1960-1964 2nd ID . I remember him talking about the M14 . Basically he said it was a brand new rifle and thought it was really good. But what he hated about it was the SGT was really hard on them with them about keeping them pristine. Vs the older Garands that already had nicks and scratches. I remember him talking about a guy dropping his and he wished he was never born after the punishment that was handed out . Poor puke.Cheers WarDawg
This is the first time the match has been won with an M1A, and this was match #12. The Moses Fal normally rules! I shot my M1A in the second go around as my AR was jamming with my reloads. Managed a 22 second time. Last shoot I came 3rd.
Next shoot is September 12. It's a timed event (max 60 seconds) with unlimited shots, but if you need more than 10 shots for 8 plates you are pretty much out of the running.

That sounds like a real blast !dance2 Thats REAL fun !
We shot similar matches at Hernando in the 1990s and then they stopped. I was an AR man then, I have since "grown" up and my preban SA all USGI is my favorite.
I never would have thunk that a FAL was so accurate.GI8
Guess it's the man behind the trigger.
Old Indian saying...........
"Any gun good, you shoot em good"
A 13 "x 8" plate is about the size of a person neck up A head shot basically. A FAL can do that all day long. We had a guy WIN it with an AK ( .223 ) and hang in there on the 300yd sniper with AR's and M14 / FALs . Yes the rifle with the man behind it is the complete package. A 3MOA rifle will take care of you on the battle field. Moses FAL is not your run of the mill FAL. It's dialed in. But he makes it happen if you know what I mean. I think he could take a sling shot and still get in the top 5 . GI8 WarDawg
It sounds a lot easier than it really is. Those plates are hard to see on the bank because some of them are in the shade, and once you start shooting you may have a large cloud of dust in front of you. The winter matches we normally have fog and burned gunpowder hang in the air!
In me old eyes, I can either see the sights without my glasses but not the plates, or see the plates with my glasses but have the front sight be fuzzy. That's why I like the M1A sights, it is almost far enough apart to focus on both front sight and target with glasses..DI5
They give out nice prizes and plaques, so come shoot the next match!
Great shootin! I have to disagree with you on the point you made above. None of these rifles are plain Jane's, with all the character and personality of these rifles.... they are just configured differently, all similar yet all different. GITEN
