I got a Birch Tiger stock from Freds and it was supposed to be one of the $155 stocks that just needed a little sanding and dent work well the stock needed a ton of sanding. I had to do a lot of sanding on the rear of the stock to get rid of the scratches and in the process of sanding it took all the original dark color out of the tiger stripes. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to darken up and get the missing stripes to match the other stripes? I've tried chemical stripper to lighten the other stripes but its not getting them any lighter. Any tips.
Sorry, Here are the pics http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/2057/10913/223102.jpg http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/2057/10913/223103.jpg
I've been searching for a thread from a couple years ago . I don'r remember the name of the chemical but I do remember I posted an MSDS because it was toxic. But it's the best for bringing out the grain ....I'll keep trying to find it...JW
If you could find it that would be awesome. I already got the dents out and am very happy with the stock if I could just get the tiger grain to show back up on the rear.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the stock looks like it has already been refinished. If so, and a penetrating finish like BLO or Tung was used, it will be nearly impossible to add anymore color. The time to do that was when the stock was raw and newly sanded. Contrast on a tiger is gained when color stain penetrates the more porous grain and is removed from the harder grain (lighter areas). Once the grain is sealed you will not be able to add. You might have some success working the lighter areas by removing more color, increasing contrast that way.
I have added color into the light nonfigured areas by dabbing ON color and working the edges to make it look natural. That takes some experimenting and practice to get it to look natural, and you are pretty limited how much of that you can get away with before it looks fake.
It is a beautiful stock and none are perfect. There were features about mine I was disappointed in. Appreciate it for its own natural beauty. Trust me - others will comment on its beauty.
The stock was just refinished with a min-wax stain hoping it would darken up the tiger stripes but it didn't do anything. I haven't done anything other than chemical strip, steam, sand and finish with min-wax. Beautiful stocks by the way.
Well heres a couple, but the thread I was looking for must be long gone. The chemical Chromium trioxide works very good but beware of the hazards. I suggest looking up the MSDS ...HTH..JW

Anyone think that maybe rubbing oil on it would help?
