Question Leatherwood Scope Mount - Question?

After much searching and reading, I’ve pretty much decided the Leatherwood scope mount is the one I want. There are others that seem like they might be a little better or nicer – but my finances are limited being on a fixed pension. Also the vertical “key slot” over the scope mount hole in the receiver of my M1A is clearly off-center (to the left) and I’m thinking this slot should be directly above the threaded hole? Since the Leatherwood mount has no vertical “locator key” – that shouldn’t matter..

Anyway, my question (that I couldn’t find an answer to) is can the iron sights still be used with the leatherwood scope mount in place? That is assuming the proper rings are used.

I’m hoping so…

Also, are you guys (that have the Leatherwood mount) satisfied with them?

Thanks.

The answer is yes and can be found on the page numbered 325 in the Online Edition of M14 Rifle History and Development at www.imageseek.com/m1a

I believe this is the mount that he is referring to. It uses any piccitiny(sp) type rings.

You can use the iron sights with the Leatherwood Bros. three point-of-contact scope mount installed and no scope rings. Depending on what rings are used on the scope mount will determine if iron sights can still be used with the scope installed.

Smile Springfield 3rd gen.

This scope mount is high enough to see the iron sights looking under the mount

AFAIK, Leatherwood Bros. has not named any of its M14/M21 scope mounts "Third Generation." The Leatherwood Bros. scope mount in the picture posted by Hawk is a three point-of-contact scope mount for the M14 type rifle. The Leatherwood Optics web site lists this version as the "New M14-M1A Mount." It was introduced to the market in 2004.

Leatherwood did produce single point-of-contact and two point-of-contact XM21/M21 scope mounts for the U. S. Army in the 1970s.

ETA: I apologize for the confusion, Trung Si. I understand now what you are trying to post.

I would under no Circumstances argue with You Lee because You know a Heck of a lot more about the 14 than I will ever know, I probably dont know what Iv'e got but I know that it's a Leatherwood and I know now that I should have stayed away from this Thread since I dont know what I am talking about when it comes to Scopes or Scope Mounts!

Slick,

If you wait a few days I'll tell ya. I just sent a MO on Monday for that same mount.

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for the input on this.. I tried to search for this info (but couldn't locate) and really wanted to buy the Leatherwood mount - due to its lack of a vertical retaining key. The vertical key on my Springfield is clearly machined off-center on my receiver and I just couldn't afford both the Sadlak mount along with the cost of the custom machining to fit my out-of-spec receiver.

I had an order of bullets I needed from Midway and noticed that they had the Leatherwood mount with the pictany rail that Hawk shows in his photograph. It doesn't look at all like the one in Trung Si's photo - so my thought is that I'll be OK as long as I use the proper rings. Since Midway kind of "jacks you on shipping charges", I was able to add it to my order and actually decrease the total shipping charge - how’s that for strange?

Anyways, given the off-center machining of my Springfield's vertical locator key - I wasn't real confident in other more subtle (potential) variations in dimensions. The amount of adjustability that the Leatherwood mount appears to incorporate into their design seems like this is going to be the best choice for me. Now it’s time to research and start saving up for a decent scope. I have a 4x32 “cheapie” BSA scope that I can use to dial-in the mount, once it arrives.,

Also I want to mention (and say a special thanks) to Different for building such an incredible website and on-line resource for the M1A. I don't know how I'd managed to miss it for all this time - but it's in my bookmarks now!

Buy a Basset or a Sadlak. They hold zero and don't shoot loose, but it's a damn Rube Goldberg mount. 6 set screws... 4 pieces... Jesus... Sold mine.
