Fulton Armory M14 / M1A Stock Review

I've been looking for a decent M14 / M1A stock w/o the selector switch cut-out for a while now. I've tried Boyd's & wenig with varying degrees of success.

I ordered one of the new Fulton Armory stocks recently & it arrived yesterday. I took a few pics & wrote up a short review of the stock. Click the picture below for the review:

I'm pretty pleased with the stock, let me know what y'all think.

Just got a PM from Walt Kuleck:

Now, for the punch line:

These are USGI M14 stocks! Really! They are being made for the DoD under US contract for USGI M14s.

I spent last weekend over at the shop & found that it took the US DoD to get Boyd's to make them to the USGI print.

So, while they may differ from the stocks of forty years ago, these are genuine original USGI M14 stocks!

How's that grab ya?

Warmest regards,

PS I don't know how you can weave the above into the review, or whether you want to, but I found the news stunning.
Now that is some really interesting information. Very cool indeed!! :D

On further thought, I don't see how FA can call these "Fulton Armory" stocks as they are not being made solely for them. They are Boyd's USGI replacement stocks...

That is a fine looking stock and a great review with quality pictures. I would live to see the finished product when complete. It might encourage me! Thanks

Glad to hear you got what you were looking for.

It seems that when Clint sells something, he thinks it's invented by him at FA. He acts like it's a bad thing to sell another companies product.

Good to know that it's really made by Boyds to USGI specs so we know who is due the credit. 8)

BTW, did ya see those "CHEESEY" dummy selectors FA is selling. If it's not one of Hawks dummies, it's not a real dummy.

I better stop before I get out of control on this.

Now you'll have to show us what it looks like when it's finished.

stock pic
pic changed to url as it is way over the maximum allowable width of 400 pixels..... The R.O.

Wow, definitely looks better than the "Fat Boyd" stock on top of it.

one question though, since Boyd is the maker of these GI contour stocks, will SA Inc start shipping M1As with these? Or are they going to stay with the current fat stocks?

Quagmire - thank you for all the info you and others posted here and on BR.com in the last few months about refinishing the USGI m14 stocks. I took a lot of mental notes and jumped in and tried my hand at it during the last few weeks. So far, I have redone a $7 gun show walnut m14 stock that now looks incredible. Tonight I finished up a Big Red birch from Fred's for my new Fulton m14, and again had incredible results.

No big secrets (thanks to your descriptions of your work), just a lot of elbow grease buffing the Minwax Tung Oil Finish with cotton cloth diapers. Another tip a friend of mine (who used to restore antique furniture) gave me was to do several coats of the tung oil finish, but while wet, hit the surfaces with 1500 grit sandpaper diped in the tung oil (this left a almost steel like smooth finish on the wood). After the sanding, buff with the diaper as normal. My friend also said to buff vigorously, so as to generate heat to really work the tung oil into the wood.

Thanks again, Blake
