I have been seeing a few op rod springs on various m14 part suppliers advertising "USGI TRW op rod spring" Did TRW make springs for the after market since from all the reading I have done TRW didn't make springs for the m14. ???

Are those OP rod springs New in the wrap? If so let's see a picture. That's the only way to confirm they are made by TRW.

(btw I've never seen NIW TRW op rod springs...)

I wouldn't bet the farm they are TRW manufacture just because the wrap is marked TRW.

Question, I have NIW HR OP rod springs. What are the chances somebody else manufactured them?

There was only one pattern of packaging for H&R op rod springs and it is well known and readily identifiable. I have never seen TRW op rod springs in original packaging so it would be difficult to determine their authenticity. Additionally, there are abundant examples of faked GI packaging for a wide variety of items, with some of the fake packaging being good and many being not so good. Just because a label may say TRW doesn't mean it is really TRW.

If your question about your H&R op rod springs is a technical question as to who the actual manufacturer is, then I would say that it is likely the springs were manufactured by a sub-contractor to H&R, just as many parts were for all four manufacturers. Further, if you are asking if the mentioned TRW springs were likely made by a sub-contractor I would agree that they likely were. In over fifty years of looking at NIW M14 parts I have never seen any op rod springs in a package marked TRW, genuine or otherwise. That's not to say that genuine ones can't or don't exist, but for as long as I've been handling this stuff I'm pretty confident I would have seen one by now if they existed.

There is a guy on GunBroker who claims he has TRW op-rod springs, they aren't. There is simply no way to tell who made them.

I don't have the experience of Gardenvalley or others here on this forum, but I too have never seen TRW packaged parts and have my doubts about these springs.

The eleven parts manufactured by TRW for their M14 rifles did not include the op rod spring. The springs were made by a sub-contractor. Since all GI op rod springs were made to the same spec it should not make any difference. They are all the same...

Yes the TRW parts off the top of my head are:

1 bolt
2 Barrel
3 Trigger Housing
4 Hammer
5 Safety.....manufactured by TRW sometime after M14 rifle production had ended
6 Rear Sight Base
7 Piston
8 Flash hider
9 Gas Cylinder
10 Receiver
11 Op-rod
12 Connector Lock

The springs are advertised by Sarco and Guns America both shown without wrapper. I just wanted a USGI spring so I sprung for a spring and I just received it today. It came in a clear plastic bag. The spring was dry and measured 15.5 inches. Cost 7.95

If SARCO says they're genuine TRW or USGI or even Made in USA , I'd bet my rifle they're made elsewhere.

Yeah, spring looked new. I ordered a tubbs spring kit. So much for Usgi, can't find anything in a wrapper. So off to LRB to complete the build.

TRW did not manufacture the spring guide or safety. These parts were made by subcontractors. I know the safeties had TRW marked on them, but they also have the subs markings. The February 1963 American Rifleman magazine published an article MAKING THE M14 RIFLE which was specifically about TRW production. It included a complete breakdown of the parts made in house and TRW's procedures. It's sad that the American Rifleman no longer publishes stories in such depth.

According to Lee Emerson's book, TRW did in fact manufacture the safety but not during rifle production, some time after M14 production had ended.

I have seen packaging marked TRW op-rod spring but that doesn't mean TRW actually made them.
