Subjective Balance Question

I'm pretty set on all the build details but the barrel.
Purpose: All-around practical rifle, unsupported shooting with occasional bipod use. 0-300 primarily with occasional shots to 500-600.

Highest volume use: Rifle classes and two gun matches.

Will nearly always wear a suppressor once the government gets around to giving me the YHM I purchased last September. Not sure if the weight at the end of the barrel would make a lighter barrel shoot better, require a heavier barrel to maintain accuracy, or have no effect.

18.5" WMMW, fluted
19.5" Medium weight
19.5" GI profile
18.5" Medium weight

What do you think the best compromise would be? The lightest choice for handiness, or a medium for better accuracy?

Shorter and lighter the better with a can in my opinion.

Just my opinion, I would go with the medium for accuracy. Medium is the heaviest I would want to deal with shooting offhand frequently. Better accuracy is an important consideration for classes too.

The 18.5" WMMW Fluted is one heck of a barrel.

I'd have to agree with that.

Disclaimer: I don't own any suppressed rifles. But if the HPA passes, I intend to get a short-barreled AR to mount a suppressor on. It's not so much the weight that concerns me as it is the length. For me, a suppressor just makes a standard-length barrel too unwieldy.

If you were not going to use the can, I'd have said 19.25" GI profile. It will be short, light and handy. In fact, I decided to build my TFL53 receiver with that barrel and an M14.CA scout hand guard.

Since you're running a can, I'd say medium weight, either 18.5" or 19.25" barrel.

However, running a GI profile barrel with an M14.CA scout hand guard may add some rigidity and still be able to run a can at the shorter distances you're looking at. I'm just speculating though.

Tony.

Hummmm......... If it were I and I'm just thinking out loud here, from the sounds of things your kind of sort of wanting a everything or well rounded fun rifle?

This is my line of thinking, as well as some strategy..

I would go 19.5 GI for its quickness, the little longer barrel to help boost the M/V a tad over the 18.5 barrel. Twist rate I don't see needing anything more than 1/12, for playing and close in work where speed and accuracy are a must hand loaded 125 TnT makes for a very fast handling and accurate rifle combo. For the occasional 300yd off hand shots when your hart rate is up from running around you don't need a heavy recoiling round in the mag, some 135SMK loaded up will make you look like a shooting "GOD".... Those 5/600yds shots with a can off the bi-pod, any good 155 or 168 will serve you well.

Stock, you didn't mention what type you have planed too use... My preference would be a well used USGI wood stock just cause its going too get knocked and bumped around while your running around. A well used stock will also add too the rifles sleepy look as in there is no way something old and ugly in overall appearance can hold it own against the black is beautiful plastic crowd, Surprise! Anyway I would add some lead shot capped off with some epoxy in the stock wells not so much too add mass or weight but too offset the rifles balance too just in front of the mag well making it neutral and easier too point when those times come when you want too use the can for close up fun....

That's my .02 worth.
