M1A Scout Handguard Replacement

Hey, has anyone replaced the plastic hand guard with a wooden guard? I have a replacement from Boyd's and having a hard time with the barrel clip, the one from Springfield seems to small and actually cracked the wooden hand guard and I had to order another. Boyd's had no suggestions. Anyone have any thoughts? I could not find a larger barrel clip online.

Did you use hand guard clip pliers to install it?

I am unaware of an oversized clip, they don't exist.

A regular clip should work.

Clips have been made by dozens of manufacturers over the last 80 years, both USGI and commercial (the M1 Garand uses the same clip).

If you have numerous clips from various sources, you will notice slight differences in size and shape. Some of the clips are better suited for wood handguards than others. In any case, you need to use a proper set of clip pliers or you will crack the wood.

I replaced my Scout guard with a FA guard, and then a vented GI. I had to alter the FA guard. Using the proper clip pliers, hook the more bent clip tab and rotate it on. You may have to sand/file the bottom of the guard some. Fit it on the rifle first without the clip, and make sure you have proper clearance, front/rear. You don't want a tight fit. Welcome.

You also need to make sure the right rear edge (behind the clip slot) is relieved for the oprod. Otherwise, it will crack the first time the oprod flies forward.

I probably have a walnut handguard with the clip installed lying around here somewhere. Let me know if you want to add to your collection.

Thanks from Rich D

I replaced the SAI Scout handguard with a finished walnut handguard that I purchased from Treelinem14.com. I got it with the handguard clip already installed from them.

I had to relieve a little wood on the handguard to insure proper fitting.

Like others have said, handguard clip pliers are invaluable if you have to remove the clip.

Like others have said, use the clip pliers and check for fit and sand the forearm ends and op rod relief for clearance. I had to check and fit with my walnut Boyds forearm guard before staining and finish. During the fitting procedure don't let the bolt slam shut but ease it into the closed position otherwise you'll crack your new forearm and you'll be cursing and crying at the same time.
