Polytech M-14S - What parts need to upgraded to USGI?

Greetings to the forum members from a new member. Also new to the M-14 having just bought my first, a Polytech M-14S. After some research, I believe the following to be true:

1. Polytechs have hammer forged receivers, barrels, and op rods, making them a good, affordable base rifle to build on.
2. Certain parts on these rifles need to be upgraded with USGI parts, in particular the bolt and trigger group.

I would sure appreciate thoughts on what parts of the Polytech need to be upgraded and where to buy them.

Welcome

I have 4 Polytechs and 1 Norinco. Going on nearly 20 yrs since the first one.

Don't believe everything you read. [ including my post ]

Check your headspace and if it's GTG , shoot the SH$$T out of it. If it's "excessive" replace it. I have all the USGI parts to swap 3 of them out but can't wear out any original parts to justify doing it.

I did swap a commercial bolt in 1 of them that was just about to close on a NATO MAX gauge. I shot many a thousand rds thru it without any concerns or problems. Swapped it ...just because.. I also put 18" barrel on one, cause I wanted a Bush/scout version.

BTW... All I shoot is surplus ammo. Any and all I can find. " IF".. TSHTF...ain't no going to the store to find your favorite match ammo. I don't reload 7.62 and not trying to turn my $400-$600 Polytechs into 1 moa rifles though they are all very accurate. I have a $500 bolt gun for that.

I have M14s and Fals because they are reliable MBR's and I treat them as such. [ multiple rapid mag dumps..etc...]

If and when the pressure from the forum gets to you to change out all that chinese junk, ,,,the best place to buy parts is right here in the marketplace

I'll be slammed shortly for the sacrilege..

Exactly what I say too. Check headspace, If its good then don't worry about it. Check every 1k rounds. I love my Polytechs and my Norinco. Great rifles. Nothing wrong with them. They are all original and just keep on shooting with not one single problem.

Thanks from speerchucker
