Need help identifying this barrel.

Just purchased this and have a few questions on the barrel. You can see its from Bula. And says BDS XM then a serial number and 8/16 ( possibly a date).

But when I measured it I get 18". I thought their NM barrels were 18.5"? Am I measuring it wrong?

Other xm 21's I see with 18.5" barrels looks like there is more length between the end of barrel and the gas plug than mine.

I know this is an older barrel from bula and doesn't have the handguard clip grooves which is why there is glue on the barrel that held the handguard on.

There are a few possibilities. 1) Try measuring from the face of the bolt with the bolt in battery (a time honored practice). To do this, close the bolt, insert a rod down the bore and mark it at the muzzle tip with your thumb, a marker, or a piece of tape. Remove the rod and take the measurement from the face of the bolt to the tip of the muzzle "mark". 2) Maybe it is called 18" because it is actually not quite 18 1/2" or 19" (just a general designation). 3) You are correct and it is only 18". 4) It could have been a special order barrel - not cataloged.

In any case, that half inch really does not matter that much to the bullet or to the target. I'll bet it is a well-made, accurate barrel. Anyway, best wishes on your investigation. It is nice to actually know what one has. HTH

FYI. 17 3/4" to the bolt face using a dowl rod.

Thank you...I was curious as to what you came up with!

"Other xm 21's I see with 18.5" barrels looks like there is more length between the end of barrel and the gas plug than mine." Your observation was correct...good eye!

Thanks from Jayfry725

Jeff from Bula just responded with information.

"Yes. It's an early 18.5" XM barrel. It is a 1-10 twist NM profile with a 9/16-32 muzzle thread. We did not put hand guard clip slots because it is deigned to go into a Sage or our CBR chassis."

I also just spoke with him on the phone. He told me it's 1 of the first 15 made by Bula.

And the measurements are the measurements, but it's still called a 18.5" barrel.
