Opinions of bubbas grinding off of heelstamp on Norinco M14

I came upon this I really do wish that bubba did not grind off m14 sporter. I was wondering about the legality of this receiver now...

It still has the serial number on the side.

I am tempted to pick it he has got it priced as a parts rifle.

Could I polish the heel then reblue the receiver?
I recently saw a polytech on goebroker on which someone ground off 'made in china' from a sidestamp. I have also seen several M1 Garands that were polished so much you had to focus to read the heelstamp.

What do you guys think. Should I go for it or has it been compromised.

Thanks
Ed

Thanks from Tommo

Seems to me this is an illegal firearm to own .
There must be a law on the books somewhere making it illegal to grind off a serial number.

I can understand why bubba ground it off mine looks like a 3 year old did it by hand
No serial number there
Here is mine not too far up the line from yours
If it freaks you out and your losing sleep over it
Find someone with a engraving table and put it back on
Or just refinish the piece and go on
Or sell it to me

So, that owner thinks that rough ground-up heel looks better than the original heel stamp ?!?! What did he use, a toe-grinder ?

Incredible.

Guys, it still has the serial on the side. If someone stole it and tried to conceal the crime by grinding the heel and not the numbers, they should get the death penalty for stupidity.

However, just so I'm clear, with the amount of good rifles and receivers in the world, you want to take that home? The hassle, time and cost of trying to fix that outweighs the fact you can get a nice piece that hasn't been jacked up.

thor, but is it the correct originally assigned number? number on the side is laser engraved, which in itself is illegal. being that the original site has been altered, jail time.

A fella could put it back on with a dremmel that's what Norinco did
It would look factory done if
Make 3 crooked lines
Make your font size get bigger as you go across
Make your B look like a 8
My serial number is engraved by hand as well

The only thing that would concern me is how thick the heel is now
Mine is marked pretty deep

Thanks from Buelligan and ray55classic

That is my thought if it is stolen why leave the serial number...it befuddles me.

Serial number is in the correct place and probably original. Grinding off the manufacturer name and address and model number could be a problem. That receiver just screams "look at me", and not in a good way.
I would pass, not worth the headache.

I agree. People do incredibly stupid things. A female police officer I knew once told me she had just arrested a guy that robbed a convenience store with a knife. He wore a mask...a clear dry cleaning bag over his head. The clerk knew him as a regular and gave the officer his name and address....he had paid by check earlier that day.

Nothing surprises me anymore.

I'd be concerned about the integrity of the heel

I wonder if JRA could do a heel transplant

Yep, grinding something that much will ruin the heat treat.
