Strange, I "just knew" three times over.

Me to. I know it is a name of a M14Forum member.

OP, Put your common sense hat on. Before SHTF/TEOTWAWKI happens the libtards will have outlawed most semi auto firearms. So what are you left with.

Maybe lever actions, pumps, single shots, black powder.

Buy an M1A or M14 and enjoy it before the jack O holes takes them away.

Seems we are getting off track here !

Get the M14 standard or with an upgrade like the supermatch model. Whatever you choose buy the one with a standard 22" barrel. The weight savings on a shorter barrel are miniscule in the overall scheme of things at this point.

OK, after you obtain the rifle go out and get 15 or 20 USGI or equivalent quality mags, cleaning and maintenance tools, backup bolt or at least bolt guts, maybe a set of pins, spare sights, springs etc, 1k of ammo for your stash and some decent field gear to hump it with.

OK, you now have what you need Sooooooooooo......learn about it, field repair and maintenance and then PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND THEN PRACTICE SOME MORE until you are a deadly weapon with that rifle at 300 yards.

NOW plant your butt here in the good old USA and defend what is OURS !

A coward dies a thousands deaths, I plan on my exit just once with maximum effect !

One more thing, this malady some call an "addiction" for these weapons is incorrect. The correct term is it's a BLESSING ! How boring life would be without your good ole M14 !

JOKER

Just get one and use it. Internet forums aren't going to give you the equivalent knowledge, nor replace the actual experience of owning anything. It will be an expensive lesson, and one you will either enjoy or regret. Such is life.
