What jewel, the scout?

My collection has grown quite larger since then. I have Nine M14's and 3 Mini 14's now and M14#10 is almost in purchase stage.

It is a great rifle. It shoots well too. The crappy camera used doesn't do much justice but the stock it is in is a Doug Carlton full tiger birch that looks like a snake. Truly amazing stock. Fits snug, hanguard sanded to no contact with the stock, hanguard locked down with high temp caulk, unitized gas, NM sights, and trigger job at 4.5lbs. Absolute beauty to shoot. And no you cant have her.

The problem with my collection is I don't think I could ever choose just one......

Thanks from Wasted ammo

Ok as far as a teotwawki gun you are asking either m1a or FAL why are you limiting yourself to these especially if you foresee the need to shoot silenced ?

Work In Progress :

Walk away, just walk away. If you can. While you still can. Don't turn around to look back. Don't tell others you once considered the rifle of iron sights and open bolt.

If you cannot,
if thoughts of the dark mistress with the Op Rod won't let you rest - whoa unto you! For your's is likely the fate of most all others here at The Firing Line Public Forum. We, who write of our experiences, typing with a sooty finger. We, who tell tale of owning, tale of making adjustments grand and minuet, to she who's profile is know in all corners of the globe. We, who claim to own one or more copies of the dark mistress, make it an inviting thing, a simple thing. We, who beck and call you to join us, we type with that sooty finger of death. Her attractions are plentiful, her wood and metal, the cut of her lines, the power she promises to unleash at your command. At the command of your finger, your sooty finger of death. You, who's heart has desires, to be envied at ranges, by all sorts of other, unencumbered, men. You will join us, we who dipped our toe, by choice or by force, into a swamp of things M14/M1A, and are forever now lost in it. We call to you, with the romance of her power, improvements to be made, her accuracy perhaps to rival all others. You will desire to control a dark mistress, to say she is yours! You will join us, holding her up in trophy like display, at the range, with your proud face on, while knowing, knowing in your blackened heart that she owns you. She will command you to type at this forum, typing to her glory. And you will type to the destruction of another, once unencumbered man.

And one day, as you sit typing to this forum, you may recall of this shriveled soul, who warned of what now is. Who warned you to walk away. You may recall this, as a tear gathers and falls on your sooty finger of death.

PS - Welcome from Florida

Scout !! Short enough to be handy, long enough to reach out and touch someone. Socom, if you plan on having to clear rooms-not the best choice for that. You see, the problem is you can't get just one. One by it's self gets lonely and calls out to another. Then the two of them call for another-Killashrub can explain how the addiction progresses.

IMO the scout is the better of the 2.

Doug, nice speech. You should write for guns and ammo.

The actual question you are trying to ask is which one first, you just don't know it yet.

I have a SA Standard, I shoot it clean the bore and shoot it some more grease it once in a while. I understand the mythical status some apply to this platform for me it's a great gun I love to shoot it with irons had a scope on her for awhile but found it to just add weight. I have taken her out in some of the worst conditions NY can offer and never had an issue.
That being said I'm not sure if it would be my end all be all grab and go gun. It's heavy empty and more so when she's full I'm not getting any younger and the thought of lugging her and enough ammo to do me any good is not to appealing.

I vote scout. Its the greatest all rounder. Short enough for CQB long enough to punch out at distance.

Get the cheapest synthetic scout you can find online and drop it in a usgi stock of your choice for that battle hardened look. Or go sage Ebr or blackfeather if a more modern stance is your preference. Or go with a walnut scout from the factory if you want something not as classic as a GI but not as modern as a sage.

Personally I like the synthetic stock approach then get a usgi stock and handguard. Then either sell the synthetic stock to fund the GI stock or keep it for when you plan to go deep sea diving with your M14!

the first step to being cured is admitting you have a problem, Killa.

Early 1994 Standard M1A in about 99% condition. Only wear is to the buttplate flap and a little bit on the edge of the oprod handle (see pics). It ejects FGMM to the 2 0'clock position and the only brass mark is where it belongs, on the edge of the oprod block.

Marked USGI parts are as follows

SA chrome lined barrel
SA trigger housing
TRW bolt
H&R oprod
OM-N Hammer
WCE elevation
BME windage
H&R sight base
KMT spring guide

The flash hider is forged USGI. The stock only has a couple of light impressions and the slotted handguard is near pristine.

Wow. Just.....wow.....
