Not suggesting you do this now since you have a heavy coating as you say, but with the base wood exposed and sanded to a desired smoothness, I would wet the stock, just run a stream of water over it with hose, then use hair dryer to dry and you will notice the grain open ups as in little fingers of wood, Then sand those down smooth for doing this reveals more of the grain of the stock. The BLO does need to be applied in small amounts from but to muzzle end and as doing that rub it in with the palm of the hand. Whatever excess oil is remaining wipe it off "against or across the grain" for that further seals the wood itself and that is what you are after. Oil paintings and the colors used are blended/thinned with BLO and it is said that an oil painting can take as much as 60 or more years to properly dry, definitely a slow process.
