The SOCOM is advertised as having a "shimmed gas system". A shims placement there won't get the job done.

Leave it to us to find a new place to shim where it will do the most damage.

Yes it needs a flash hider, just kidding. (not really)

The shim appears to be in the wrong place. Its ok, we all make mistakes.

I'd be concerned of a baffle strike if you run a can on it, beside the accuracy issues and poi shift as a result of canting from that shim.

I was watching a youtube video of some noob showing off his M1A and that's where he said the shim goes, too. I corrected him in the comments section. Hopefully no one pays attention to the video.

I posted this image for its educational / instructive value alone. There is a right way to assemble parts and a wrong way. Sometimes the wrong way can have undesired, unexpected, or even harmful consequences. A newbie who may see that assembly may think it is the proper way to shim a gas cylinder. He would be wrong. "But I saw it done that way on the M14 Forum..." Regards.
