I own Springfield Armory M1A serial number 020000. This is the only gun like this they have ever produced. So says their letter from Mr. Reece in 1993.
This rifle is all hard chromed and has a laminated stock. I have contacted Springfield many times and they will not give me any information on it whatsoever.
I would like to know whom it was built for or why was it built.
Lee Emerson mentioned it in his book on the M-14. I wrote to Lee and sent him pictures. He had no more information than I already had. (Nice man by the way.)
If any of you folks know anything about this rifle please share. Thanks in advance.
In 1993 Springfield offered a special run of rifles numbered in even thousand serial number range. I had number 15000 for a spell. It was a nice rifle, blued finish, and had a gloss stock finish with an inlaid medallion. It's not known how many of these special edition rifles were sold, but not many as the even thousand number only totaled about 65 at that time. Evidently your rifle was a one off custom. If it came that way from Springfield it was held back out of the limited edition models, probably for a custom order. It's a special rifle and has some collectors value.
As I recall, Springfield always tried to do something special with the serial numbers that were even 10 thousands. I have been under the impression that they went out to favored distributors and other VIP clients. Yours would have been from 1980 or so. I have only seen one other, and the owner was very proud of it ($$$$).
