M1A iron sights are not "clicking"

Hi all,

Just picked up a m1a loaded a few weeks ago and have a blast with it. I have got it out to 300 yards using the iron sights.

Over the last three weeks I have noticed the clicks have diminished to a kind of click for about the first 8 or so clicks, then the clicks get a bit better.

So how can the mushy clicks get correct when the arpature is bottomed out for the first 10 or so clicks? screws are tight, etc.

thanks

Make sure the teeth on the left side of the receiver are clean.

Make sure the tooth on the elevation drum isn't worn.

Apply a drop of oil or grease to the contact area.

The nut in the center of the windage knob controls tension. Tighten it one click (about a quarter turn) and check movement of both knobs.

Nut on the windage knob clicks on 1/2 turn increments.

Tighten it till the windage knob just locks up, then come back 1 click.

rear sight

the same problem happened to me with my first M1A SUPER MATCH back in the mid 80s

the receiver was not heat treated correctly the ELV. KNOB had warn a GROOVE in the wing

so clicks were gone .called SAI they replaced the rifle without question.....

you should take the rear sight off and for the same problem.....

What runoff_1 wrote is true, some earlier receivers had this problem. I've seen it first hand.

Thanks everyone, have done all the above and still mushy at the bottom for aprox 10 or so clicks. i will give SA a call and see about replacement part. The only rub in the theory of the elevation know gear being worn is that;

when it is bottomed out and the elevation knob is in the zero position where the slippage occurs, when rotated 1 revolution whereby the elevation know would now be in contact w/arparture again, it clicks fine. That would suggest that the arpature gears are worn at the top by the peep sight, but i have checked and it isn't. overall pretty simple mechanically. but just not consistent w/clicks.

and again, great gun and i have the sights working great and are almost spot on at the 100 200 and 300 mark w/fed 149 ball and fed gmm 168, and that is why is would really like the consistency in the sights for shooting w/the irons.

A sight disc could be a bandaid. If the receiver serations are worn, the barrel probably is too.

i have found that tightening the windage screw periodically after moving the elevation up and down helps. it appears to me (and i am new to m1a) that the screw on the windage side loosens up a bit after elevation usage. is that normal?

well to wrap this up in case people have the same problem, i found a post on the internet somewhere that said it best and did the trick. now everything is working outstanding!

key key was to tighten the elevation knob screw, windage screw and then **** push in the elevation knob while tightening the windage screw!

that last part about pushing in the elevation knob while tightening the windage screw did it. now she clicks like it should, very clean and distinct.

thanks all for the help.

Thanks from ptaleo
