OP UPDATE: Issue Resolved

So... I took a flat file to the bottom of the lug that's welded on the aft end of the magazine. I went slow and checked the fit after about every 5 passes or so. Eventually, I got both Pro Mags to the point where they will positively and consistently lock into the rifle, and with no apparent negative side effects or unintended consequences (knock on wood).

I have not yet tested with loaded mags, or live fired. Next time I'm at the range with this rifle, I'll do so and report back here ONLY if there are problems.

Still... I wouldn't recommend Pro Mags to anyone, but I suppose the silver lining is that they appear to be salvageable if you do end up with one.

Oh. After looking at them for a while, they're a glossy black that just doesn't look right (or good) to my eye.

Bill

Welcome to forum.

Buy only USGI or CMI mags for the M1a. Springfield mags are CMI rebranded.

Promags are ok for the ar15.

Yes Sir. Lesson learned. Although I believe I'm done buying anything with the name ProMag on it.

I hate Pro-mag and refuse to recommend them to our customers because of the their problems. That said, I still had to modify my Checkmate (CMI) mag lugs when I did my stock swap.

Thanks from Porkchopper

That is my rule of thumb. However...one of their plastic drums for my Saiga 12 has fit and fed just fine - so far. But it's for fun - not one I'd ever depend on for serious work.

It's interesting you mention your "stock swap".

When I removed the complete action from my stock, the ProMag mags fit fine. It was ONLY when the action was in the stock that they didn't positively lock in, which was very counterintuitive for me, as I didn't observe any spot where the stock would interfere...
