XM21 Sniper Rifle Vietnam (pic)

Was given permission to post this pic by the owner.

RVN and Cambodia Aug.69 – Aug 70

"The pic was taken by the sniper who was in my rifle squad and then assigned to sniper school in Cu Chi. We were with the A Co., 2-22 Inf. (Mech) “Triple Deuce”, 25th Inf Div.

The photo was taken the day after a night ambush patrol that this sniper, wish I could remember his name, was assigned to. He wanted me to take his photo with the weapon, which by the way I have along with the photo of his sniper school class at graduation in Cu Chi.

I had the pleasure to fire this weapon at the range in Cu Chi at night with the matched star-light scope. It's a fine weapon and I was very happy to have it and the sniper as our guest on ambush patrol that evening.

P. Gary"

This is not the kind of picture you see from Vietnam everyday.

Great picture Hawk, thank you and thank the owner for it being posted.

Little did they know how much just putting that action into a tight fitting usgi fiberglass with some forend reinforcement would have done for it. I'm sure it would have dealt with the wet and humid Vietnam battlefield a bit better.

Great picture!
The M21 Sniper Rifle weapon system is probably one of the must under rated, misunderstood, ans unappreciated rifles we had.
It's 3X9 power Automatic ranging telescope, ART, was simple and effective to use. No mil dots, range finders, or calculators required. Training on this system was fairly easy and it could provide consistant hits out to 900 meters (about 1000 yards) in the hands of a good shooter.
The biggest problem it had was difficulty in maintaining it in the field. The loss of one small screw could disable it's automatic ranging capability. Most armorers were not familure or didn't have proper training on this rifle and parts were in short supply for it's limited issue.
It did however work and work well! The fact that many are still in use speaks well for them.

A very cool picture.. thanks for sharing. AR TEL, proven in the field to be a fine optic... but with 1500 or so of them made, they are a scarce find today...

A couple of mine:

Thanks a bunch Hawk.
By any chance do you have a high resolution link?
I'll take that one and have it enlarged and framed with the rest.
WOW!!! I have never seen a pic like that, ever.

You would have to get it from the owner. The pic cannot be used without his permission.
