Karnak's top 10 list for new M14 users

For those looking to buy there first M1A /M14, or already bought there first. I thought I'd share a few items of wisdom learned in this forum to get you started. I never liked Letterman but here is my top 10 regardless.

10. You decided to buy or have already purchased the last great battle rifle made with a full size 7.62 rifle cartridge.
9. Buy from SAI, SEI, LRB,JRA,Fulton, BULA to name a few of the more popular manufacturers in no particular order. Let your budget dictate or learn exactly what you want from this forum. So much wealth of consolidated knowledge available from the people on this forum. Before you buy, check the PX frequently as there are great deals to be had there.
8. Watch all of Tony Ben’s videos. Yes, all of them. You will probably watch them multiple times as well as you get into the various areas of the rifle.
7. Take a lot of pictures of your new rifle for future reference points. For instance in the chamber and bolt areas. If a burr or gauge appears, you should know if it was there before with pictures.
6. Buy quality magazines. You just paid a lot of money for the rifle. This is no time to cheap out on mags and then spin everyone up when you have feed issues. Good mags is USGI, or CMI. Nothing else.
5. Buy good ammo for accuracy. This will usually be 168 SMK’s. Federal Gold Medal Match is the gold standard for accuracy.
4. Buy a lot of good ammo, and in quantity to save money. Trust me on this; you never have too much ammo. This is M1A 101, reloading is in 201 so don’t give me crap about your re-loads being the best.
3. Clean and lube properly before you shoot it. It doesn’t come from the manufacture lubed correctly. See number 8 again, I told you to watch it multiple times. Clean and lube after shooting. This is always up for debate but if it’s good enough for the military, it’s good enough for me.
2. This is a good time to check the checking account. There will be less money there, likely much less money there. Hey if you wanted to save money you would have bought an AR15 with the inexpensive 556 pills. You bought a great battle rifle and this is 7.62 so man up and deal with it. And buy more ammo while your at it. Get used to having less money. There is always more to buy.
1. What, you only bought 1 rifle? That needs to change.

Good luck and enjoy the M14 platform and welcome to the forum from Illinois.

And save all your reloadable cases for WHEN you decide to start handloading for the M14.
