I'm looking into getting a medium weight Barnett Barrel 1 in 10". I'm planning on shooting some surplus (144-147gr.) and some 168 & 175. A little bit of everything. All in all, I'll be shooting open sights within 300 yds. For fun accurate shooting, no matches. Will it really matter 4 or 6 groove?

Back around 1982 the National Guard purchased Barnett six groove heavy barrels for each State Rifle Team. We found that they would shoot Sierra 168 grain Match King bullets extremely well, but most (not all) did not shoot as well with GI M118 bullets. The M118 bullets shot fine in a four groove barrel. We determined that the M118 bullet with it's thicker jacket simply didn't like being shot from a six groove barrel. The six groove has shallower rifling which may have been a contributing factor. If you are primarily shooting Sierra or other commercial match bullets, the six groove rifling will work great.

My gunplumber who is just a little younger than dirt and been shooting rifles since before the garden of eden echoes what Ted said . It appears that the four groove will tolerate different bullets better , which is good if the match you are going to Issues ammo you must use .
