Rear Lugged Receivers ... ???

As of late I have observed the fact that a few folks have went and got themselves a rear lugged receiver.

Keep in mind that these are not to be confused with the "double lugged" as in the Supermatch weapons ...

I was merely curious as to "exactly" what advantage these might have over the standard lugged M1A ...

Correct me if I am wrong here but a "lock down" is a "lock down" whether it be either of the two into a stock so that can't be it ... right?

Is it the weight distribution ... ???

Balance ... ???

Accuracy ... ???

I do know that it makes it rather difficult to do a simple and quick "change out" of stocks unless one has another one with the modifications to it for the rear lug ...

So what is it then that might make these appealing and/or advantageous ... ???

TIA

Back to subject...
Yes Ive often wondered the same thing. I mean if its locked in there it cant move right. rear lugs or not. Perhaps its just to destribute the recoil energy over more area. OOORRR its a marketing gimmic.....dought it though. Ive never even seen a rear or double lug reciever. If anyones got a pic of one please post it up.

Springfield's M1A Super Match has but one lug (a rear lug). There are several companies that sell double lugged receivers but not Springfield.

The purpose of the lugs be it one or two is to prolong the life of the bedding job. The bedding on my two Smith lugged receivers are both over 10 years old and I was told by Ron Smith when he rebuilt them the bedding was fine. Most match rifles like my two Smith Enterprise M-14's will have not only lugs but bedding bolts or screws holding the action tight in the stock.

I agree with MsgtMaze stated about the lug on the rear of the receiver this is referd too as a rearlug the front lug is to prevent the receiver from riseing during recoil bedded or not, holding the front of the receiver more securely at this point. Now you ask what are they secured by,not buy the bedding material alone by bolts that run through the stock-bedding-threadding into the lugs.

I gave this more thought last night lugging the receiver also helps the barreled action from doing the slinky in your stock

i've been told that the purpose of the lugs is to give a greater surface area for the bedding to contact. makes sense.

i've also been told it helps accuracy only slightly.

The Tactical/Carlos Hathcock model M1A utilizes the Springfield Armory threaded, rear-lugged receiver. It must have some signicicant value because those things cost $3900. and are 1/2 MOA rifles

that's just SA getting high on themselves. they also charge $95 for a USGI 20 round magazine that packaged in a blister pack that has springfield armory on the card.

you can do better for less money by sending your rifle off to a top smith.

I guess my point is, If the rifle is "High end" the manufacter turned to a rear lug reciever as opposed to the standard methods. This fact leads me to believe there is merit in a rear lugged reciever. Again: regardless of price---> it is a 1/2 MOA rifle.
