Aloha,

I got to go to the Koko Head Range today! Beautiful day... and skies were blue! With only a light a variable wind.

I have oohed and aaahed over pics that I have seen posted of other ranges so I thought today, I would also "shoot" a digital camera as well...

These are a few pics of the Koko Head Range where I shoot at. In fact it is the ONLY public shooting range on the island.

Shooting benches are provided but are getting a bit old. But they still work. This is my bench with all my junk... this is the Chocolate Crunch on the bench at this time...

The rifle range has at least 60 shooting positions... This picture shows the target frames set at 50 and 100 yds.

200 yds. Iron Pig and other targets.

250 yds. An iron deer... a lot larger than life size...

300 yds, square plate, 320 yds, silver bell and 430 yds, large round plate...

Another pic of the mountain backdrop. Bullets have been know to go over this mountain and hit residential houses on the other side... so NO .50 cal shooting for sure.

This is the "action shooting" area where they hold the IPSC style matches... run and gun!

This is where the have skeet and trap shooting... I am not a shotgun shooter but it looks like fun!

This is a normal crowd over at Koko Head. Notice everyone in shorts and T-shirts... yep, that is the normal attire here... there are about 6 RO's watching the range and they are usually VERY responsible and keep an eye on things!

We are required to make and bring our own target frames. Because some clown complained about having to pay 25 cents to use one that the Range made and provided... This is a pic of the my target frame.

Today, I tested the M118LR with several different rifles. I used the Rem 700, SA FAL SAR-48, AR-10T and my trusty Chocolate Crunch. All seemed to perform well with the M118LR. However, the Rem 700 was really outstanding!

I hope you like the pics... and I was obviously very happy to be at the range today!

Aloha and Best Wishes,

Tom O.

Very nice Tom. I wish we had a range with facilities like that around here. It puts the ones I shoot at to shame.

From the way you have your rifle positioned on the shooting table, I see you're a lefty too. Very cool! ;)

Aloha,

We've been pretty fortunate... one of the Mayors' in the past, tried to change this range into a 9 hole golf course! Imagine that! However, it looks and feels the same as it did for the last 20 years or so... I think its an area that is not too important on the Gov't list of things to fix up!

The majority of the shooters take care of the facilities because its the only one that we have. BTW: This range is on Oahu and about 20 minutes from Honolulu... oh heck, everything in Hawaii is about 20-30 minutes away...

The picture of the shooters was only of the long gun, rifle shooters... when I get back into shooting pistols, I will definitely take some pics of the pistol range... and better pics of the shotgun guys...

I think there are 2-3 military ranges but I haven't had a chance to see them yet.

One of the best parts of shooting is the "Talk Story" after the range closes and some of the guys are cleaning their rifles... that is really a lot of fun.

Hey Sixt... you better get a new monitor soon... I'm afraid you're going to go into "withdrawls" not being able to post...

Aloha,

Tom O.

Great pics Tom.
Another pic of the mountain backdrop. Bullets have been know to go over this mountain and hit residential houses on the other side... so NO .50 cal shooting for sure.
Too bad no .50 cal. No houses behind my range but gas wells are starting to pop up so I encourage 50 cal at my range 8O Make them idiots duck once in a while. Maybe if I put enough holes through there rigs may be they will just leave

Hey Steve...

I know... we can fit our entire range in your front yard! I saw the pic of your house to the front gate... Wow!

Nah, don't shoot the .50 at the rigs, I know you got a 20mm somewhere in the closet, right? That will do the job for sure! I would leave in a hurry!

The pictures were taken of Koko Head Range on Oahu. It's the island with Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Schofield and the Marine Corp Air Station...

The weather is pretty much like this year round. The only difference is that during the summer months, the surrounding area gets brown and dry but during the winter months (we only have 2 seasons) everything here is lush and green with the cooler weather and rain. WE do have bad hurricanes once in a while and they get really BAD! The last on was INIKI which flattened the island of Kauai and took them years to clean up and rebuild... some are still recovering...

I think everyone would be comfortable here... casual attire is always in order and blue jeans, shorts, T-shirts are fine! Usually, it is so warm that anything more would be uncomfortable. I do wear a jacket during the winter months but of course, my friends from the mainland laugh at me saying a jacket is NOT needed...

I am really looking forward to the cooler weather coming up!

Aloha,

Tom,

Thanks for the info. Spent the first two weeks of July in Hawaii for my honeymoon. July 3&4 on Oahu. Drove past Hickam Field and Schofield Barracks on the 3rd, and went to Pearl Harbor (USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri), and the Punchbowl Nat'l Cemetery on the 4th. Good place. Hope to go again.

Aloha Ron,

Congrats on the marriage! Cool!

So you got to spend a couple of days here, huh? Did you get to Bellows over on my side of the island? The AF has a "rest camp" there and for $1 you can have a cabin right on the beach. That is really COOL!!! White sand beach, calm water with just enough surf to let you "boogie board"... if you didn't get a chance in July, you gotta try this out on the next trip!

As kids, we used to camp, fish, surf and hang out at Bellows... back then it was (and I think still is) run by the Air Force but is open to all military for just a $1 per night.

If you want to wind surf, Rob Naish (world reknown) has a shop and offers equipment and classes at Kailua Beach Park. Now this is where I live and its always calm blue (cool to the touch) water with white sands...

Let me know if you want some pics of this before your next trip and I can take some for you... I love the beach...

Aloha,

Tom O.

Tom,

Didn't get over to Bellows although we did take a good long drive to the north side of the island then southeast towards Diamondhead and back to Honalulu. Just stayed two days in Oahu, then four in Hawaii, and finally four in Kawa'i. Now that I've been there once I'll be a bit more savvy in planning my next trip. When the time comes your advice will certainly be appreciated. For now I'll have to console myself that I've been to as nice a place as Hawaii, and that maybe someday I can return for a longer stay. Speak to you.

I went to a range the other day that had the shooting benches made of concrete. That is the best and solidest benches I ever saw. and cheap to make.............SP/4 :D Twiggy

Aloha:

Ron, anytime I can help, just holler! I don't know much about the night life, but I am familiar with most of the beaches and natural recreation around here... I also spent a lot of time on the Big Island (Hawaii) and it is perfect for hunting, and all sorts of outdoor activity! That you will have to check with Steve K., I think he spends more time there than I do...

Twiggy, the benches in my pics are "old", I think they were the original benches that were there over 20 years ago... I seen some brick benches and that would be a great improvement... the local clubs would build them if the State, City and County would buy the materials... but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Aloha,

Tom O.
